Guest Speaker -
Mandy Bujold
Champion Featherweight Boxer
Alison Scott introduced Mandy who joined us for a second visit since 2011. As a young girl, she never saw herself as an athlete, especially as her parents guided her towards baton twirling, ribbon gymnastics, and other girly pursuits. However, one day at the age of 16 she walked into our local boxing club where her brother was training. She thought it looked like fun, and after a year of recreational boxing, a coach talked her into entering a tournament, which she won. She had found her passion, and has become an 11 times Canadian Champion boxer in her category.
The Olympics was her dream and she was able to compete at the 2016 games. However, due to an sudden onset illness, she didn't medal causing her to reflect on how "it's not what happens to you, but how you react to what happens". She realized that you should control the controllable, and discovered that her extensive training kicked in and she was stronger than she thought. She has her sights set on the 2020 Olympics, but for now is stepping back a bit from competition. She's recently married and has chosen to remain in the KW area.
Currently she works at Communitech in Business Development. She also wants to expand her work in mentoring youth. She's a remarkable young woman with a lot to offer both young athletes hoping to advance their skill and to youth to find and follow their passion.
Everton Wilmot thanked Mandy for her inspiring and encouraging presentation. We are all so proud of her and her accomplishments.
