Plastic Free Oceans Wanda Beach Clean Up - 24 March 2024

story thumbnail
Another successful monthly beach clean up was conducted on 24 March 2024 following on from past successful clean ups.  Please feel free to join us at our next 'Cronulla Rotary & So Shire' beach clean up on 27 April 2024.

Rotary Club of Cronulla members aim to attend Wanda Beach on a monthly basis. We join with others interested in achieving plastic free oceans, and for a couple of hours, we collect and remove plastic items from the beach. We meet initially near the surf club Cafe and then proceed to the beach. All that is required to participate is a bag, gloves and a fund attitude. It's such a great way to get out in the fresh air on our beautiful beach, get a big of exercise, while giving back to the community. We thank very much So Shire for assisting our Club in organising the activity. We also thank those that volunteered on the day.

Upcoming Clean Up days are advised on our 'Rotary Club of Cronulla' Facebook page. https://www.facebook.com/cronullarotary/

XMAS Cruise - 19 December 2023

story thumbnail
Our Club ended the calendar year in style with a wonderful - and rocky - Xmas cruise on Gunnamatta Bay in Cronulla on Tuesday 19 December. While the weather was calm at the start of the cruise, reports were subsequently received advising of approaching stormy weather. As a result the cruise captain made the decision to move to protected waters within Gunnamatta Bay.

Whilst all the guests had a very enjoyable time, the highlight of the evening was the decoration of ex-President Carol Denison with a Paul Harris Fellow (PHF) 2 award presented to her by District Governor Tonia Barnes. Congratulations Carol for this well-deserved award! Thanks are extended to Ellen Klees for the organisation of the cruise and the on board cruise raffle. Thanks are also extended to the dignitaries, family and friends who joined our members on the cruise.

Cronulla High School Practice Interviews - 1 December 2023

story thumbnail
Members of the Rotary Club of Cronulla, and of other organisations,  attended Cronulla High School, as has been done in previous years, to provide the students with 'interview' experience, that will hopefully help them prepare for future job interviews. Prior to the interview the students were required to prepare an 'Interview Folder' containing documents such as resume, references, school results and awards. Each interview was of approximately 15 minutes duration. Feedback was provided at the interview to students via a pro forma Evaluation sheet. Our Club members were impressed, as has been the case in past years, with the quality of the students. This in turn reflects favourably on the quality of teaching at Cronulla High School". Bevan Gosby, Career Advisor, Cronulla High, provided our Club with positive feedback advising "I have had some very positive feedback from our students today who gained some valuable skills and ideas from the experience".

BACKGROUND

The Cronulla Rotary Club has been providing support to an international project – ‘Yavusania Village’ outside Nadi, FIJI, for the past six years. Our main focus has been their village medical clinic. On our club’s first visit the clinic was an empty building. For the past three years our club raised funds, and along with a Rotary Grant we have been able to help the community in developing their medical centre facility which is supported by the Fijian Government. Unfortunately, due to COVID the work has been held up for the past two years and the community has not been able to work so unable to keep the supplies going for the original medical clinic. The club is continuing to support the good work that the villagers are doing leading to a sustainable and healthy future for their families and children.

End Polio Train Ride - 23 February 2022

Posted on Feb 23, 2022
story thumbnail
Members of the Rotary Club of Cronulla visited the Cronulla Railway station in support of Rotary Australia's "End Polio Train Ride" activity.

Virtual Train Ride to End Polio – Wednesday, Feb. 23rd

Each year in Sydney along with other cities in Australia, there has been a Train Ride to End Polio fundraising event. The Sydney train ride has raised over $450,000 in the past three years, so for Polio it is a focal point for fundraising. This year, due to Covid the event was postponed, and again due to Covid it is not practical to ride the trains so we have created a VIRTUAL TRAIN RIDE to end polio. We also have a new fundraising platform called RAISE FOR ROTARY and we ask members and friends of Rotary to try it - go to https://raise.rotary.org/EndPolioVirtualTrainRide/challenge21.

More information on the important work of Rotary International members in eradicating polio can be found at https://www.rotary.org/en/our-causes/ending-polio

U Turn the Wheel: successful driver awareness for students

The "U Turn the Wheel" program is a one-day in-school program that is now being delivered to Year 11 students in every High School in the Sutherland Shire. "U Turn the Wheel" is coordinated by local Rotary Clubs and supported by Sutherland Shire Council. Between 2009 and 2012 the casualty rate of 17-20 year old drivers fell 49% in the Sutherland Shire LGA (where UTTW has 100% of the schools) whereas there was a 13% reduction across the Sydney Region.

Another successful Pre-WWll Vintage Car and Bike Show

Numbers were up again this year at the annual Pre-WWll Vintage Car and Bike Show. In the 8 hours of the show it is estimated 25,000 people came through the mall to see Pre-WWII machines, many of which were well over 100 years old.

The event raises much needed funds for the Sylvanvale Kids Club. The Kids Club is vital to the Sutherland Shire and surrounding communities. Sylvanvale Kids Club ensures that school aged children with disabilities are cared for after school, during school holidays and on weekends. The event would not be a success if it was not for support from the Sutherland Shire Council, the Sylvanvale Foundation and Cronulla Rotary members.

Rotary Club of Cronulla’s 26th Annual Charity Golf Classic

Another very successful golf day was held on Monday 19 February 2018.

The event raises money for Motor Neurone Disease research. Motor neurone disorders (MND) are one of the most rapidly-progressive age-related diseases known to man. There is no known cure and no effective treatment for MND. Each day two Australian people die from MND.

The golf day event helps us sponsor PHD scholarships. Dr. Dharmadasa is a Neurologist who recently completed her Advanced Training in Neurology through the Royal Melbourne Hospital and The Alfred Hospital, Victoria.  Through this time she cultivated a particular interest in motor neurone disease, and is now commencing a PhD in this area under Professor Matthew Kiernan, University of Sydney, Co-funded by The Rotary Club of Cronulla.

India celebrates three years without polio

Throughout India and around the world, Rotary clubs are celebrating a major milestone: India has gone three years without a new case of polio. The last reported case was a two-year-old girl in West Bengal on 13 January 2011. To mark this historic triumph, Rotary clubs illuminated landmarks and iconic structures throughout the country with four simple but powerful words, "India is polio free."

The three-year achievement sets the stage for polio-free certification of the entire Southeast Asia region by the World Health Organization. The Indian government also plans to convene a polio summit in February to commemorate this victory in the global effort to eradicate polio.

    Saving lives in Ghana

What is it like taking a large team to Africa?  It has probably been one of the most rewarding experiences in my life. In mid February, I began leading Rotary members from all over the East Coast of the United States through Ghana. I’ve tried to give the team a warm Ghanaian welcome like I’ve received on my earlier trips. A large trip is a real blessing because each person sees Ghana and our work in a different way.

A highlight for the team was greeting the chief of Sagadugu. The team got excited about buying goats and food for children in the villages where I support eight churches. It was good to see the pastors of most of the eight churches, and I had to explain that we were just passing through on our way to Bolgatanga.

Helping people with disabilities make their own music

Music has been an important part of leading an ordinary life for students at the Music School for Children With Disabilities in Honor of Paul Harris in Lublin, Poland. Founded by Rotary members, the school serves 20 students with various disabilities, including Down syndrome, autism, and visual impairments. The Rotary Club of Lublin-Centrum-Maria Curie-Sklodowska has provided funding with help from Rotary Foundation Matching Grants and the Henryk Wieniawski Musical Society, which houses the school.

After their son Mateusz was born with underdeveloped eyes, Mariusz and Joanna Kania looked for ways to help him be active. When he showed an aptitude for music, they looked for a teacher and were thrilled to find the Paul Harris music school.

    Finding Safe Haven

For years, Angalia Bianca had slept in abandoned buildings throughout Chicago. She stole. She did drugs. She spent time in and out of jail for forgery, theft, trespassing, and possession of narcotics. But after she landed in prison for the seventh time, something changed -- Bianca knew she wanted a better life. She just didn’t know how to make it happen.

After serving her time, Bianca sought help from a local homeless organization, A Safe Haven, and moved to its shelter in the Rogers Park neighborhood. Bianca followed the program closely -- she attended all the required meetings, passed drug tests, and volunteered at every opportunity.
