We’re into June and it is the last month of my Presidency already. The year has really flown and each month has brought something new, something challenging and something rewarding. We’ve had a very successful year in lots of ways - we’ve settled into a convivial place to meet, enjoyed an increase in membership, seen an increasing in fundraising and therefore donations into the community, enjoyed an interesting, varied and stimulating program of guest speakers and strengthened partnerships with other community groups. I will have more to say about the year that was and thank all who have contributed to its success at our Changeover on Friday 6 July at Heidelberg Golf Club. Bookings are now open at Trybooking - see the link below to book.
Last week we enjoyed another interesting presentation and found that much to the surprise of many we could all sing. Leon Moore from the Rotary Club of Doncaster runs a weekly group called LAARFS and showed us how singing can transform the lives of people with neurological issues by helping with rehabilitation and quality of life.
The 2017-18 Board will have its last meeting of the 2017-18 year at Mercers on 20 June and will also host the incoming board. Incoming and outgoing Boardies, please don’t forget to RSVP to outgoing Secretary Ann Lynch prior to 7 June.
The Shade Sail project in the playground area at Eltham Lower Park is drawing to a close with an official ‘unveiling’ this Wednesday 6 June at 10am. The Hon Jenny Macklin MP and Nillumbik Mayor Peter Clarke will be in attendance and everyone is welcome to attend. You will recall that we partnered with the Shire of Nillumbik to apply for funding under the Federal Government's ‘Strengthening Communities’ scheme. The Shire of Nillumbik also matched the grant of $10,000.Stay warm everyone.

Only a couple of weeks before Judy's Presidential Year finishes and we are ending strongly with some great speakers in the next couple of weeks. This Thursday we have a special guest - Senior Sergeant Shawn Kostiw from the Eltham Police Station. Shawn is new to the role in Eltham and looking forward to connecting with community groups and building relationships. Come along and hear how we can connect and develop stronger ties with Eltham Police and hear Shawn's ideas for his new role.
Some weeks ago the Community Team had a request from a domestic violence association about a young mother who had been a victim of domestic violence from her partner. The request was to help her by cleaning and tidying the property. On speaking to the young lady we decided that we could get some Rotarians and do a clean up of her back yard and garden area. On Saturday April 12th we had 8 Rotarians - Paul Kelly, Dennis Booth, Kevin Haddingham, Les Coath, Denise Billings, Ann Lynch, Irene Cant, Dale Atkins - come to help. The work was pulling apart an old trampoline and a general clean up and with so many Rotarians helping we were finished within an hour and a half. We then enjoyed afternoon tea at Dennis Booth's home. Very enjoyable time was had by us all as well as providing some much-needed assistance from RC Eltham.
This is short notice, but for anyone that is interested to have a look at a fantastic night of sport and to see two great teams (Queensland and New South Wales) line up against each other - I have at least 2 FREE tickets maybe 4 to the MCC Members section for the State of Origin game to be held this Wednesday 6 June 2018. They are general admittance - NO reserve seat. Game starts at 8pm.
