Last week, we were privileged to have a presentation from Innes Bigaran, a local PHD Candidate at Melbourne Uni, on ‘The Not-so-Standard Model.’ Innes gave us a short lesson on Particle Physics, The Standard Model of Elementary Particles, and current research which may well be putting pressure on the ‘Standard Model’. Very, very interesting! Coincidently, those who read ‘THE AGE’ on Fri July 13 would have noticed the article on Pages 1/2 ‘Stargazers trap a ghost.’ This was about trapping Neutrinos, the universe’s ghosts. Remember? Innes taught us about them and this is what she is researching. The AGE article adds further context to what Innes spoke about and talks about the IceCube lab that has been dug 2.5km beneath the South Pole where a Neutrino observatory has been built. And to think that RCE gave a helping hand to Innes seven years ago with a part sponsorship enabling her to attend the National Youth Science Forum and later, the London International Youth Science Forum. Innes admitted that her attendance at these forums re-ignited her enthusiasm for Science and her network of contemporaries now expands world-wide. Innes is a very intelligent, passionate and articulate young woman driven by her curiosity to learn more and make more sense of what is currently unknown. Wow!!!  (If anyone would like a copy of The Age article, let me know)

Vocational Service is one of the five Avenues of Service in Rotary. (Others are Club Service, Community Service, International Service and New Generations Service). Vocational Service is possibly the one area that we have focused less on so what a great way to begin our Guest Speaker program with a young PHD student whose future as a Researcher and Scientist looks very bright indeed

We have some great Changeover photos taken by Dale and Ian (thanks guys) which were on a slideshow rotation on Thursday night. The access link to these is https://photos.app.goo.gl/n2C2MbTMzfCh2C2J9 so do check them out.

We have our first Board meeting on July 18 and one of the first tasks for the new board has been for Directors to draft at least 3 or 4 achievable goals for the year ahead. These goals are complementary to those set by last year’s board and will serve as a focus for committees to work on in the months ahead. We’ll share these with you in the weeks ahead.

This Week at Rotary
Making Milk for Mental Health

This week our speaker is Sallie Jones. Sallie is a dynamic young lady who has taken on helping and making a difference to farmers in Gippsland.  From starting a Farmers Market in Warrigal to getting farmers to talk about mental health issues - she is starting to make a difference.  Sallie is a mother of 3 young children, business woman, entrepreneur and PR expert as well as the co-founder of a new millk brand - Gippsland Jersey.

Come along and hear how Gippsland Jersey's three key business pillars - farmers must be paid a fair price, remove the stigma of mental health and old fashioned kindness be part of everyday.

Chairperson:  Alison Cooper
Fine Master: Gary Williams

'Better Together' Launch
Please join us at the Diamond Valley Library on Thursday 19 July at 4pm for the launch of Better Together – a travelling art exhibition featuring work by artists from Araluen and St John of God Accord.
The exhibition was named after a work of art entitled Better Together, created by a group of artists from St John of God Accord, and commissioned by Council to celebrate the International Day of People with Disability.
In the spirit of Better Together, Nillumbik Shire Council is asking the community for feedback to help guide us in creating our Disability Action Plan. The exhibition will be held at various locations across the Shire over the next six months. At each venue postcards will be available for you to fill out so you can tell us how we can make Nillumbik more inclusive.
The exhibition runs at the Diamond Valley Library until Friday 3 August, and moves to the Hurstbridge Hub from August 6, with other venues to be announced.
For further details or to rsvp, contact Council’s Inclusion Unit on 9433 3379 or email inclusion@nillumbik.vic.gov.au.
The exhibition is proudly supported by Eltham, Diamond Creek and Hurstbridge Community Bank® Branches of the Bendigo Bank.
Rotary Jokes

A doctor, lawyer, and a Rotarian in charge of fundraising all die and arrive at the Pearly Gates about the same time. St. Peter tells them they may each have one thing to take with them to Heaven.

The doctor is first, and asks for $1 million. This is given and proceeds to enter Heaven. The lawyer, not to be outdone, asks for $2 million. "Very well," say St. Peter and opens the gate to Heaven for the lawyer.

Finally it is time for the Rotarian, who had just finished a fundraising project for The Rotary Foundation. St. Peter asks him what he would like to take to Heaven. The fundraiser moves up very close to St. Peter, and in a soft voice asks, "It it's not too much trouble, could I just have the names of those two people who were ahead of me in line?"
