Last week we heard from some up and coming young people who have banded together to support one another in their chosen artistic endeavours. The Squish Arts Collective has been formed by young artists, potters, musicians, writers and poets who have gotten together in the best traditions of Eltham artists and will be having their first exhibition at Eltham Library from July 5 this year. Our presenters, Ellie, Jordan and Shelby, are 18 to 20 year olds who all went to local schools (Montmorency SC, Eltham High and St Helena SC). Their association with us started when they applied for a quick response grant from Nillumbik Council which in turn asked us if we could be the auspice organisation to hold the funds for use by the Collective in framing art works, buying materials and mounting the exhibition at Eltham Library. After hearing from Ellie, Jordan and Shelby, we were very happy to be able to supplement the grant by $500 to assist the project. Many thanks to Treasurer Lou who will be liaising with the group in the use of the funds.
It was a busy week last week for some of us. Rob, Ken and myself met with the police, Nillumbik Council and the RSL last Tuesday night to debrief the Anzac Day Dawn Service. The result was a process put in place for next year for planning road closures and risk management - a great leap forward and a load off the shoulders of Anzac Day Director Rob Kilcullen.
On Wednesday night the Board met for the last business meeting this Rotary year. Our Board meeting next month will be a social one to thank Boardies for all their work over the past twelve months and to welcome new Board members. Amongst the matters discussed, the Board signed off on the last remaining funds to be expended this Rotary year.
Sadly I have to announce the resignation of Ian Kiddle from the Club for business and personal reasons. Ian has been a member for the past three years and has contributed greatly to fundraising efforts through his extensive network of contacts. I wish Ian and wife Deb all the best for the future. See you on Thursday for our 45th birthday party.

What a night we have planned for this week at the Heidelberg Golf Club in the Eaglemont Room. I hope you and your partners can join us to celebrate the Rotary Club of Eltham 45th Anniversary. The club was Chartered on 19 April 1973 with the first President Geoff Dreverman (1973-94) followed by Neville Emerson in (1974-75). Please come along to meet again some of the past members and Presidents and to have a look at some of the memorablilia we will have on show. The club has certainly had an impact on so many projects in the local area and we should be proud of the achievements made to date. Book in now if you haven't already with Denese.
Judy Sharp: Decision on winter menu decided by show of hands – soup to replace dessert.
Alison Cooper: Next week is RC Eltham’s Anniversary Celebration. Have lots of photos of club activities – some incriminating! Partners welcome.
Paul Kelly: As expected a slow BBQ day on Mothers’ Day but raised $437. 3 x Entertainment Books left to sell.
Ron Manison: Fundraiser for Josh Davis raised $70,000 which will help towards renovating his home. Proud to be a Rotarian when looking at members’ organisational skills and willingness to step up and assist with raffles, silent auction etc. on the night.
Rob Kilkullen: Funds raised for RC Hout Bay, South Africa have been transferred. Feeding program enables 777 children to be given breakfast of an inoculated porridge daily. Our contribution a small effort but extremely worthwhile.

Now is a great time for giving to The Rotary Foundation!
With the end of financial year rapidly approaching, many individuals and companies are now reviewing their annual accounts and recognise that the Australian Tax Office can help them “make a difference” in the world through tax-deductible philanthropic donations. No doubt you are already being approached by mail, emails, and phone calls from worthy organisations seeking your donation ….. but how do you choose?
The Rotary Foundation of Rotary International is our ‘own’ charity enabling 35,000 Rotary clubs to implement projects in support of disadvantaged individuals and communities locally and across the globe. In the 100 years since its inception in 1917 the Rotary Foundation has contributed over $3 billion dollars to life-changing sustainable projects.
Foundation projects are directed to 6 causes: fighting disease, growing local economies, supporting education, saving mothers & children, providing clean water, and promoting peace. The Foundation’s Polio Plus initiative has been significant in wiping out 99.9 percent of all polio cases worldwide. Donations to Polio Plus are also matched by a 2:1 donation from the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation.
The Foundation has been internationally recognised with the 2017 Award for Outstanding Foundation from the Association of Fundraising Professionals. The award honours organisations that show philanthropic commitment and leadership through financial support, innovation, encouragement of others, and involvement in public affairs. The Rotary Foundation also has been given an exceptional 4 star rating by the Charity Navigator website. The rating system shows donors how efficiently a charity will use their support, how well it has sustained its programs and services over time, and its level of commitment to accountability and transparency. In the words of Ian Riseley, President of Rotary International “To put it simply, a dollar given to The Rotary Foundation has a great deal more muscle than a dollar given to most charities” (Rotary Down Under, Nov.2017)
Now is a great time for you, your family, your friends, your business to consider “Making a Difference” in the world with a donation to our charity, The Rotary Foundation (with a little help from Mr Hockey and Bill & Melinda Gates!).
Payments made directly to The Rotary Foundation in the USA will not be issued with a tax deductible receipt. For Australian donations, cheques need to be made payable to "The Australian Rotary Foundation Trust" to be tax deductible.
