Another week and another great speaker lined up for this Thursday 19 October. This is the last meeting at The Third Chapter before moving our meetings to the Heidelberg Golf Club. We are pleased to have Professor Damien Kingsbury, Director of the Masters of International and Community Development at Deakin University who will be talking on Timor-Leste's current circumstances, including its recent elections and the agreement with Australia re the long running dispute over maritime boundaries in the Timor Sea. Timor-Leste is one of our closest neighbours but one of the world’s poorest countries. Ravaged by war and 24 years of Indonesian occupation and the almost total destruction of all infrastructure following the independence vote of 1999, Timor-Leste is struggling with a fragile economy, high unemployment, massive food insecurity, poor quality education and health services. Come along and hear how Timor Leste is handling the changes and new government following the recent elections. Chairperson: TBA Fine Master: John O'Callaghan |

SEX, GENOMES AND THE FUTURE OF MEN
This week we have the honour of having an amazing special guest - long term Eltham resident Dr Jenny Graves’ PHD is in molecular biology. As an evolutionary geneticist Jenny works on Australian animals, to discover how genes and chromosomes and regulatory systems evolved, and how they work in all animals including humans. Her laboratory uses this unique perspective to explore the origin, function and fate of human sex genes and chromosomes, and famously predicted the disappearance of the Y chromosome. (What – no men?!)
Jenny is Vice Chancellor’s Fellow at La Trobe University, Professor Emeritus at ANU
and “Thinker in Residence” at University of Canberra. In 2017 she became the first
woman to be a sole winner of the Prime Minister’s Science Prize.
This is a special opportunity to hear from a local personality who certainly has stories
to tell!

This meeting we have a local couple coming along to outline their charity work in Hout Bay which is a town near Cape Town South Africa. Sue and Len Horwood have created a crèche feeding program and an education support program they are involved in with the Rotary Club of Hout Bay. Sue and Len live in Eltham and have for some time supported these initiatives from their own finances. The club has donated to the feeding program and so this is a great opportunity to hear first hand the reason why a local couple are so passionate about helping children in South Africa.
