Larry B introduced James Gandhi, Director of Business Development at Aecon Energy East. James talked about the Nuclear projects Aecon is currently executing, including the retubing of the 4 Nuclear reactors at Darlington, the removal & storage of nuclear waste, and the future of the nuclear industry in Ontario and worldwide.
Afew interesting tid bits that we learned.
Nuclear is 58% of our supply and the cost is 6.8 cents per Kwh. Hydro is 23% and cost is 5.7 cents. Gas amounts to 9 % and cost is 14 cents. Wind is 8% and cost is 13.3 cents. Solar is 2% and cost is 48.1cents.
After a nuclear bundle is used it gets put in a swimming pool for 3 years to cool down. After that they encase it in concrete. Can then be moved by a fork lift.
Presently there are 16 reactors going to be refurbished. Not including planning a head of time it takes 30 months to refurbish a reactor. Projects are to be finished by 2023. Aecon is not the only supplier but is a major one. Total cost is 13 billion.
