The meeting's speaker (David Wood) was introduced by President Heidi. David came to talk to us about business acumen, entrepreneurship and addiction counselling. He started with a little background, but when he said "going back to the early 60's", I stopped taking notes. However, the premise of much of his talk was predicated on an incident he observed while attending Harvard in the 60's, where the brightest student got the faculty and other students together for a chat. During that chat, the student made the following comment, which David then expanded upon in his talk to us. "If the purpose of a company is to maximize profit, society will end up in revolution" David then went on to discuss the merits and necessity of engaging workforces as a means of creating purpose in business. He talked about his concerns on the current state of multi-national corporations and the need to have "family owned" businesses. David told us how he and his partner changed the way they managed their business to maximize the engagement of his employees by having everyone on salary, not differentiating between "levels" and allowing all employees to manage their piece of the business. All in all, a very thought provoking presentation |
