Opening and Sgt at Arms Report
President Jim opened the meeting, Mike Thomas recited the 4 way test and Dr Tom read an invocation.

SAA Rena reporte21 Rd otarians and 5 guests in attendance. Two of the guests were visiting Rotarians Mike Jennings (Cambridge North) and Mike Bolger (Waterloo North). Other guests were Kim Gagne (Chad's wife), Mike Ellis and speaker Brian Beckles (President/CEO of Junior Achievement Waterloo Region).
Health and Good Cheer
No report today.
50-50 Draw
Our newest member, Caitlin, ran the 50/50 today. She disqualified herself from the winnings by throwing in both stubs of her ticket (bet she only does that once!).
Today's draw had an "Open Mike" theme to it in that it ended up being open only to gents name Mike. Really! Mike Jennings (Cambridge North) pulled Mike Bolger's ticket (Waterloo North) who, in turn, pulled our very own Mike Thomas's ticket. Coincidence? I don't think so.
No one pulled the winning ticket and rumour has it that next's weeks draw is an "Open Heidi" theme.

Good News
Paul McMenemy was doubly blessed with good news today. Wife Suzanne had her staples removed from her fall and she is doing well. She was very touched by the bouquet of flowers sent to her by our Club and she enjoyed them all week. Unfortunately, Suzanne is off to Winnepeg today to see her mom who is not doing well. Paul's other news is that he is off to Edmonton next week for the 50th Anniversary of the Canadian Airborne Special Forces Regiment. I'm sure Paul will have lots to share when he gets back and, if you haven't asked him about his time serving on the special force, make a point to do so.
Noah managed to get away to Florida for four days this month which was a much needed (and deserved) getaway after a busy tax time.
Matt just returned from a trip to Tuscany and summed it up by saying it was 'stunning.'
Our Toddler announced that he ran in the Superhero Run last Sunday for the first time ever and came in FIRST place ..... for the 50+ category. Rumour has it he was the only one in his category so it's a really good thing he didn't place second.
Dr Tom (and Janet) are going to be away until sometime in August as they are heading up to Whitehorse and Alaska, expecting another grandchild to make their grand debut end of June or early July. Please do let us know when the new babe arrives!
President Jim McP was happy to report that his friend Paul survived a motorcycle accident. Being hit by a tractor trailer and thrown 30 feet took it's toll on him but he's alive and Jim is happy to have his friend recovering from the ordeal.

Jokester
We did not have a joke today.
Announcements and Upcoming Events
Erica thanked all the volunteers from last Sunday's 32nd Superhero Fun Run and noted that our very own Brian had done a fabulous job taking and posting photos on Facebook. While the numbers aren't yet in for how much was raised, it's believed that there were over 500 runners. Wow!
Speaking of "Wow!", it is this particular Newsletter Editor's opinion that the whole Batman and Batmobile thing was really HOT!

PaulT Cody reminded us about the President's Ball on June 15 at Whistle Bear and referred to the email that went out to all members this week from soon-to-be President Linda. Please confirm your attendance and order your meal online via that email. Guests pay $65 and can register via that same link. We need to confirm our numbers with the venue by next Friday, June 8 and we are committed to having a particular number attending so please bring guests or pay for a few of your extra personalities! We have a new band and a new venue with a fire pit and other cool stuff. Rumour has it that, at the end of the night, they are going to give out free puppies and yoga mats. It's going to be so very AWESOME!

Erica put in a plug for Best Bites which is our next big fundraising event. Mark your calendars for Sept 9th. Tickets are $125pp. Theme is' Jazzy Blues.' Start thinking about sponsors etc.

President Jim McP gave us a FUN-Raiser Update. His goal as President this year was to have 4 FUN-Raisers. To date, we've had a pig roast at Marcia and Randy Renner's fine residence (from which the term President Plastic Pants was born) and a weekend ski trip to Collingwood (did anyone actually ski?). A Beer/Winery/Scotch tasting (not all three in the same glass) is in the works for next month and the fourth FUN-Raiser, a "Nine and DIne," will be held early on in Linda's year as President. Keep watching this space for more info.

Program
Cathy Gosse introduced today's speaker.
Brain Beckles  is a graduate of Wilfrid Laurier University. He and his wife Leanne have lived in Waterloo since 1997. Brian has worked in the non-profit sector most of his career at post secondary institutions until recently accepting the position as President and CEO of Junior Achievement (JA) Waterloo Region in October 2017.
Brian showed us a 2 minute video about "JA Worldwide" which segmented the work of JA down into 3 main areas: Work Readiness, Financial Literacy an Entrepreneurship. There are over 50 programs in total and JA is represented in 122 Countries. Brian noted that our very own Nicole Pereira was instrumental in launching JA in Japan - way to go, Nicole!
JA exists in major cities an rurual communities across the global and their focus is to inspire and prepare young people to succeed in a new global community.  They are the largest charitable organization in the world that focuses on educating youth this way and they work with youth from Grades 5-12.
JA Canada started in 1955 and is the largest youth business education organization in Canada. There is one national office and 16 charters - one of which is right here in our own community.
JA Waterloo Region started  in 1970 and their particular focus at that time was to teach financial literacy to youth in our community. They rely on volunteers and corporate sponsorship to bring hands-on learning into the classroom during class time as well as after school. Their Company Program (Grades 9 to 12) is a 20 week night school program that involves the start up and sale of a company. There is no cost to students for this and it is offered at 3 locations (Kitchener, Waterloo and Cambridge). The in-class programs are run in both local school boards an in about 250 classrooms. The average cost to deliver a program to one class is $700.  Approx 4,400 students took part in the program in 2016/17 an they anticipate they will exceed 6,000 students for 2017/18. Grade 7 and 8 students are targeted for the financial literacy program.
There were some interesting stats that Brian cited:
- JA Students are 50%  more likely to own their own business.
- For every $1 invested in JA there is a $45 ROI in the community.

Impressive talk and great opportunity for Q& A time.
Tom E thanked our speaker.
