Anne Cameron
Canadian Women in Afghanistan

My name is Anne Cameron, I am a retired elementary school teacher and I love to belly dance. I have turned this love of the dance into a means of fundraising for the Teacher's Salary Project of Canadian Women for Women in Afghanistan (CW4WAFGHAN) I have prepared a one hour workshop (can be shorter or longer) which includes a short history of belly dance, information on CW4WAFGHAN and of course belly dancing! I bring coin belts, hip scarves and veils for each participant to wear while we learn the basics of this art form. The dance lesson is a simple, 10-15 minute "follow-the-leader" Arabic version of "Heads and Shoulders, Knees and Toes" - if you went to kindergarten and grade one, you can do this…!?!? I bring everything, including the sound system. My only requirement is a room big enough to accommodate the group. Living rooms work fine as we just dance around the furniture! The sessions are simply geared to learning something new and having fun. My fee is $30 regardless of the number of participants. Any additional donations to the Afghanistan teachers’ fund are gratefully accepted. Receipts are issued for cheques of $30 or more made out to CW4WAFGHAN. Donations can also be made through the website. The history part of the session deals with how it all started with women dancing with women and stopping everyday activities to celebrate such biological markers in a woman's life as puberty, menstruation, childbirth and menopause as well as cultural ones such as birthdays, marriage and anniversaries.
