RYLA and Youth Exchange Program

It was so great to have the students from RYLA and the short-term youth exchange visit our club on July 9 to share their experiences with the programs. All of the students shared with us how much the programs meant to them and made a difference in their lives. What touched me most, as I'm sure it did with many of you, was when one of the students thanked Rotary for everything we have done as she fought back tears. This student shared with us that if it were not for her participation in the STRIVE program and youth exchange, she might not have graduated. For her, Rotary certainly made a life changing impact.

Recently, Rotary adopted the new vision statement:

Together, we see a world where people unite and take action to create lasting change — across the globe, in our communities, and in ourselves.

We were able to see on Tuesday that programs like RYLA, STRIVE, and Youth Exchange do create lasting change across the globe. If you have an interest in more actively working with any of our youth committees or programs, to contact me and or any of the many people in our club that are involved with the youth programs. We also need to look to potential new Rotarians that can help us continue to provide and improve on these great programs.

Dues Statement and PolioPlus

The co-Treasurers are working on getting dues statements out soon. At the District conference a few months ago, many of the clubs shared what their dues were and what we found out is that our dues are among the lowest! This is for a few reasons. One is because we do not have a paid staff person (though we do share in some costs for three club activities). Another is our meeting space costs are built into the meal prices. Finally, we do not include PolioPlus, Rotary Foundation, or Fast for Hope in our dues statements. Thanks to the great work by the Foundation Team, we are in good shape on our Foundation goals. Our Happy Bucks and (now) High Fives go toward our Fast for Hope goal. That leaves PolioPlus as the one area where I'd really like you to consider adding to the amount you send in for dues. I suggest $30 per member would be a great amount for us to contribute to this ongoing initiative. Rotary is on the cusp of eliminating polio for good. Your support of PolioPlus will bring us that much closer.

Singalong at Whitewater
We will have a program on the centennial celebration at Whitewater State Park on July 16. To celebrate the 100th birthday of one of the state’s most popular and picturesque parks, staff with the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources have been highlighting Whitewater’s history with special programs that will culminate on Saturday, July 13, with a centennial picnic and a sing along featuring the Grammy Award winning Okee Dokee Brothers. The concert, running from noon to 2 p.m., is free and no park entrance fees will be charged for the day.
