and take action to create lasting change -
across the globe, in our communities , and in ourselves."

Greater Rochester Rotary
2017-2018 Medium Club of the Year
District 5960
What a fun meeting! The Rotary Jeopardy game format was designed to  ensure that members from the 3 clubs were seated at each table. We have great 3-club programs so it is a real joy to meet fellow Rotarians in the other clubs.
The game illustrated why Mike's vision of talking about Rotary is important. Rotary offers a plethora of ways to do good in the world. The more we know, the more avenues of good we can explore.
DG Mike Becker recognized Mike Van Straaten with a Paul Harris Fellow for Mike's long standing and excellent work on Holiday Classic Team. Long as in - Mike actually played in the games as a youth. Well deserved, Mike!

ROTARY READERS - The new service idea got 75% interest vote as indicated  in the survey. (50%  participation rate in survey) More information was requested. Presenting dictionaries to third graders is important for it opens the door to expanding the children’s vocabulary. But why stop there. We can provide additional support to 3rd graders who will receive a dictionary or to 2nd, 1st, or kindergarten students who are developing their reading abilities. The location of pilot is Riverside. Training is provided. Time options: 30 minutes  to help 2 students, 15 minutes each ; 60 minutes work with 4 students, 15 minutes each.  Frequency options: Once a month needs a team of 4; Twice a month needs a team of 2, every week commits same day each week. The commitment is the same day at the same time with the same children. If you cannot make it, let Kim Norton or Mary McCoy so a sub can be found. The Riverside coordinator of this program said that the individualized help, even for 15 minutes , has proven to help the student in reading and in self confidence. Questions? Contact Kim or Patricia

Rotary Monthly Theme : Membership- Talk about it everywhere
One section of the article , Step Right Up", in the August Rotarian, reminded me of GD Mike Becker's vision which he summed up in one word, "Rotary". The implication is that we should be talking about Rotary at work, family gatherings, neighborhood get-togethers, parties.  Tom Gump, Edina-Morningside Club,  admits that he got a lot of nos when he asked about membership but he also got 31 yeses!  Think about that. It took a lot of asking. You never know when you will meet the next member. What will you share about Rotary? Our goal is to recruit 5 more members. More are welcomed! Let's talk about Rotary; let's learn more about Rotary; let's do more good in the world.
GETTING TO KNOW ROTARY
A quarantine on killing -  Transforming Lives
Rotarians are committed to promoting peace
An epidemiologist who helped stem the spread of cholera and AIDS in Africa, Gary Slutkin has a new – and successful – strategy to stop the contagion of violence: Treat it like a disease . A program called Cure Violence was developed. Where implemented, the Cure Violence model typically reduces violence by 41 to 73 percent in the first year.  Click me for a Ted Talk. This is the kind of program your Rotary supports.
