Beat the Blues Goodie Bags was a successful way to help 100 people in a nursing home feel a connection with the outside world. They felt someone cared. It also involved elementary students participating in a community service project. They helped pack the goodie bags. This year we will be involving high school and elementary school students. Volunteers needed.

Safe Harbor, Sex Trafficking, and Sexually Exploited Youth Speaker: Andrea White, Regional Navigator Sexual exploitation of youth in Minnesota is commonly overlooked, misidentified as something else, and undocumented. For the first time, Minnesota youth who engage in prostitution are viewed as victims and survivors, not criminals. They will be treated with dignity and respect and directed to supportive services, shelter, and housing that meet their needs and recognize their right to make their own choices. As part of Minnesota's Safe Harbor Law and No Wrong Door model, each region of the state has a Regional Navigator and other services. At this meeting, you will learn more about the services and more detail about the Safe Harbor law. Marriott Courtyard Saints, free parking behind the hotel. Order lunch from the menu. If you have a brain, you have bias. Bias is not inherently all bad. But we must be aware of our bias. At this meeting we will talk and think about our thinking: How subconscious bias affects what we think, believe, and do. I think of myself as a good and fair person, so I wonder if I will be surprised? It should be a good meeting. Ready to learn? Speaker: Rick Olson, Prior Lake Rotarian is a member of the District Ethics Team. Has done presentations on 4 Way Test and Braver Angels. He also started a nonprofit in the Nakavale Refugee Resettlement in Uganda. The goal is to provide an education that will help the children have the best future. This year we have had several programs on innovative education programs initiated by Rochester Public Schools and their partners. Hawthrone Education Center is another example. "Not everyone follows the traditional path of education, some students veer off early, others travel from far away and enter the middle as teens or as adults. Some individuals complete the path but need to retrace their steps or learn new ones. Rochester's Adult Literacy Program can be a new route to learning. Anyone 17 or older may chart a new and personalized educational path by entering an Adult Literacy class." Karen Cook, the Outreach Coordinator, will give us an overview of successful adult literacy classes. This is a hybrid meeting. Greater Rochester Rotary needs your unwanted tools. We will deliver them to St. Joseph’s Tool Chest, a non-profit organization, to refurbish them to a nearly new condition and redistribute them, free of charge, to non-profit organizations that can make use of them. We want manual tools: yard and garden implements, rakes, shovels, hoes, and shears; shop tools: pliers, screwdrivers, hammers, saws, and wrenches. We want power tools (battery or plug-in): drills, saber saws, table saws, routers, drill presses, and chainsaws. We will even take sewing machines, bicycles, and industrial machines. We especially want emergency generators. We can also use hardware: nails, screws, nuts, bolts, etc. (We do not take any kind of electronic equipment. We do not accept computers, printers, cell phones, TV sets and the like.) JOIN US in helping you clear the clutter while also getting refurbished tools to those who need them to live a better life! |

The three Rotary Clubs in Rochester work cooperatively several times a year. One of our favorite joint projects is tree planting. This is the 5th year working with the Rochester Parks and Recreation Department. The location is Quarry Hills. We will be planting around 300 whips. The park staff goes in and clears out the buckthorn. Rotarians and community volunteers plant whips of various types of trees to help stop the invasion of non-native plants. This is a picture from last year. Plant the tree, water, and put a protective tubing. WE LOVE THIS PROJECT! Tonight from 4 pm - 6:30 pm, All hands are welcomed! |

BACKGROUND The Fast for Hope Initiative is based on the belief that a new model needs to be created in order to more effectively address the problem of systemic poverty in the world. This new model is based on a belief that the local community knows best what they need and that the community must take ownership of any solution in order for it to be successful. Finally, this is intended to be a multifaceted effort simultaneously addressing the myriad of needs that are interconnected and which cause the residents of one or two particular communities to live in extreme poverty. UPDATE Rick Heidick, Stillwater Sunrise Club, will share the progress being made. This project is moving forward. Our donations are improving lives. Drama! Love! Comedy! Let's have fun this summer at the Great River Shakespeare Festival. Today, Aaron Young, Managing Director, will share all you ever wanted to know about the festival and I bet things that you will find very interesting. I remember a few years ago someone from the festival came and shared a sonnet. My first thought was - - - boring. Then he gave some background and read the sonnet again.
