Long Standing Rotarian Ken Maynard

It is with deeply saddened that we are informing all the members and friends of the Rotary Club of Woodbridge along with District 7070 of the sudden demise of Rotarian Ken Maynard. He passed away overnight on his 87th birthday. It is indeed a sad day for the Rotary Club of Woodbridge to have lost a long serving member who was respected in our community and in particular in the Rotary Organization. He was a member of the Rotary Club of Woodbridge since 1962 soon after our club was chartered in 1955. Jamie has been carrying the torch of his father and been one of the main assets in the Rotary Club of Woodbridge over the years.
Who had the honor to knowing Ken, developed the greatest respect for him. Ken was known for its deep knowledge of the History of this Country but mostly the History of Vaughan. Members of our Club spent some memorable times with him and we will all truly miss him. His dedication and living the life of Service above Self was inspirational to all. Thanks you Ken for everything you have taught us, and thank you for all you have been giving to your community.
Our sincere condolences to Taflyn and his 3 sons, Peter, David and Jamie. Please have his family in your prayers to give them the strength to bear this irreparable loss.
This picture was taken in 2011 at the Olympic Stadium in Athens. Ken is running the 100 meter dash wearing the Rotary Club of Brighton Tilly hat.

Classical Music for a Good Cause

Classical Music for a Good Cause

`

The Rotary Club of Woodbridge recently hosted The Italian Canadian Symphony Orchestra's inaugural concert at FF North Event Centre in Vaughan. They were joined by The Three Tenors in Armonia (in harmony). The Rotary Club is a community based organization that raises money for humanitarian causes, at work here in the community and abroad. They are a collective of businesses and professional people united worldwide who are altruistic and encourage high ethical standards and help build good will and peace in the world.

Often, The Rotary Club will host events like this to raise money for the community and good causes. Their main goal with this event was to raise money for better living at Villa Leonardo Gambin long-term care home in Woodbridge. Villa Gambin not only caters to seniors, but adults with special needs as well. All funds from this night at the opera were donated for the purchase of new, state-of-the-art beds for the residents of the long-term care home. Villa Gambin holds a special place in Vaughan's heart as is it a place of dwelling for many citizens' family members. It's important for people to feel that their family is taken care of, which is why everyone in the room was grateful to The Rotary Club of Vaughan for their efforts in this cause.

The Three Tenors: [Left to Right] Conrad Siebert, Rocco Rupolo, and Nicolas Rhind.

It truly was a performance in armonia. The evening was enchanting as Maestro Paolo Busato conducted his orchestra in perfect harmony as they played classic Italian favourites, such as Caruso, Con Te Partiro, and more. The audience was overwhelmed with emotion as these songs were executed with such passion by the symphony, performers, and maestro, who didn't miss a beat. The Three Tenors were backed by the beautiful voices of the Belle Voci Ensemble. It's true that if you close your eyes while listening, this robust repertoire can make you feel like you are back in Italy, deep in wine country - just as the program promised.

These classical Italian songs had the audience in a trance of personal memories brought on by some of the most emotionally powerful songs in the late 19th century. At times, you could glance across the room and see spectators wiping tears away, immersed in the music. This gathering was a reflection of the important work The Rotary Club does for the Vaughan community. They find delightful and engaging ways to raise money for those in need. Thanks to The Rotary Club, in collaboration with Maurizio Bevilacqua and the City of Vaughan, and Anthony at Commercial Bakery, the residents at Villa Leonardo Gambin received four new upgraded electrical beds! It was an unforgettable evening.

Rotary International Theme for March: Water & Sanitation
Most of us are fortunate to have clean, drinkable water right from our home. Imagine if you didn't have this. Imagine if you had to walk miles each day to access water. Imagine again if there wasn't any clean water and your family was becoming ill from drinking dirty water.

This month, Disaster Aid Canada is focusing on providing Water Filtration Systems to 2 countries; Nigeria and Yemen. Both countries are experiencing many problems; one problem is people are getting sick from drinking contaminated water. With your help, we can make a difference by sending as many Water Filtration Systems as possible to provide millions of gallons of clean, drinkable water.

A $100 donation will provide 1 Million gallons of clean, drinkable water. Your donation will promote good health and well-being. Before you go turn on the tap and enjoy a glass of water, please consider making a donation. These shipments will be sent in March.

It is not only about money......

Posted on Dec 05, 2016

FEATURED EXCERPT FROM CHAPTER 11, "IT’S NOT JUST ABOUT THE MONEY"

In addition to making the first personal contribution to The Rotary Foundation, Rotary founder Paul Harris also established a trust that would generate income for him and his wife, Jean, until their deaths, when the remaining balance would be given to the Foundation to educate underprivileged children.

In 2016-17, The Rotary Foundation turns 100. That's a century of helping Rotary members change lives and improve communities all over the world.

Throughout the year we're posting excerpts from "Doing Good in the World: The Inspiring Story of The Rotary Foundation's First 100 Years." You can purchase the book at shop.rotary.org.

To learn more about the Foundation's centennial and find tips and resources for celebrating, visit www.rotary.org/foundation100.

From Chapter 11, "It's Not Just About the Money":

In 1944, Paul Harris created a charitable trust, which stipulated that the income would accrue to him during his lifetime and to his wife, Jean, after he died. Upon her death, the balance of the trust would go to The Rotary Foundation. Jean died in 1964, and the Trustees accepted the bequest and honored Harris' request that the money be used to educate underprivileged children.

Others have designated that their gift be used to support a favorite Rotary Foundation program in the name of a loved one. Sir Angus Mitchell, the first Australian to become president of Rotary (1948-49), helped launch this tradition in 1949, when he established a scholarship for an Australian student in honor of his wife, to be known as the Teenie Robertson Mitchell Memorial Fellowship. Thus began a long tradition that continues to this day.

Bruno Ghigi wanted to honor his father, who had been a member of the Rotary Club of Rimini, Italy. Throughout his childhood, Bruno listened to his father regale the family with wonderful stories of Rotary's work. After leaving school, Bruno joined his father in the family business and he later branched out to form a software company that became one of the most successful in Italy. Bruno joined Rotary and became club president and a Rotary Foundation Major Donor. In 1988, on the 20th anniversary of his father's death, Ghigi donated $350,000 to The Rotary Foundation to establish an endowed fund to benefit refugees, the sick, and street children in Africa and Brazil.

Some recipients of the Foundation's benevolence have later felt inspired to pay back so others could enjoy that same experience. For example, Sadako Ogata, one of the first Rotary Foundation scholars, later donated $10,000 to the Foundation in appreciation for the scholarship it had bestowed on her as a university student. "Rotary set me on a course that I am still continuing. If I had not gone to the United States as an Ambassadorial Scholar," she said, "I don't think I would have pursued the study of international relations."

Richard Illgen, an Ambassadorial Scholar from Mainz, Germany, studied business and economics at Northwestern University in Evanston, Illinois, USA. After graduating, he joined Kraft Foods, where he enjoyed a very successful career. Wanting to provide a similar scholarship opportunity for others, Illgen and his wife, Irene, made a gift — matched by Kraft Foods — that provided $23,000 for a scholar from his home district in Germany to study at Northwestern.

OCTOBER 24 POLIO DAY

Posted by Renata Pancini on Oct 17, 2016

WATCH OUR POLIO PARTNERSHIP COME ALIVE AT WORLD POLIO DAY

As volunteers and advocates, Rotary members play a crucial role in the fight to end polio. Our partners in the Global Polio Eradication Initiative will come together in Atlanta for World Polio Day.

On 24 October, World Polio Day, Rotary will bring together partners from the Global Polio Eradication Initiative for an update on our fight to end polio. As host and moderator of the event, our organization plays a key role in amplifying one of the most important public health concerns in modern history.

When we first took it up as an organizational cause over three decades ago, polio affected 350,000 children every year, mostly in lower-income countries where poor sanitation and limited access to clean water facilitate the spread of the virus.

Our collaboration with the World Health Organization, UNICEF, the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, local health workers, and national governments has helped reduce the number of cases to just 74 last year. When the final case is behind us, polio will be only the second disease, after smallpox, ever to have been completely wiped out.

This year's event, the fourth to be live-streamed and the first to be held at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention in Atlanta, Georgia, USA, is our opportunity to put the fight to end polio in the public eye.

Helping our Community

Hi Rotarians
I have been thinking to an alternative to the usual " Minutes of Meeting", and I thought that we could use some changes.  This Bulletin could be sent out to all the members and non-members as well since it collects the spirit of our Meetings with the essential information.
The object would ultimately be to have more than one or two members publish life experiences or information. Let's start with the first report for all the members that were not present at our meeting last evening.

Another successful story from our Club.................
During our weekly meeting on Monday July 11th, we disbursed the funds raised during our last Frog Race to Creating Alternatives.
Phyllis Santone President and Founder of Creating Alternatives gave us information about the allocation of the $2500 donated by our Club. The Funds will support the Art Therapy Summer Program that is offered to adults with developmental disabilities.
Creating Alternatives provides day programs to adults with developmental disabilities over the age of 21 in York Region and Toronto.
For more information please visit: www.creatingalternatives.ca

Visit from the Executives of our Interact Club

It is always a pleasure when members of our Interact Club participate at our meetings.
Yesterday we had the pleasure to have the Interact President Aaliyah, Club Secretary Olivia, Treasurer and Public Relation Nicole, Member Olivia and V.President Catherine.
The Interact executive is preparing for the new school year. During the summer they will be helping at our Ribfest as volunteers. They reported to our Club news from the school and the proposal to create a new school t-shirt with the School Coat of Arms and the Interact logo. They hope to use this new t-shirt to improve membership among the school students. During the summer they are also planning a visit to Creating Alternatives.

My dear friends,

I am pleased to bring you the good news that His Holiness Pope Francis will officiate at a Mass to Rotarians at St. Peter’s Square, Rome, on 30 April. We will have 8,000 seats reserved for Rotarians, as well as friends and family.

It is my great pleasure to invite you to join me in Italy on this day as we celebrate the Jubilee of Rotarians, a special event hosted by Rotary District 2080 and the Vatican.

In addition, local Rotarians will host special celebratory dinners and plan a service project for attendees.

I believe this event is a tremendous honor that will raise Rotary’s status across so much of the world, and it should bring us all great happiness to be a part of it, regardless of our own religions and beliefs.

For more information, please visit the Jubilee of Rotarians website, which has been provided by our friends in District 2080. Updates and additional information will be available leading up to the event. Registration will open 18 January. I ask that you also include mention of this event in your governor’s monthly letter.

This Jubilee, as established by Pope Francis, is known as the Holy Year of Mercy. It marks the time of forgiveness and reconciliation, of solidarity, hope, and justice. It is a commitment to serve with joy and in peace across the world.

As you work hard to Be a Gift to the World, I do hope you will make the effort to be in Rome with as many members of your district as possible.

Best regards,

Message from RI President K.R. Ravindran

Posted by Renata Pancini on Aug 10, 2015

Just a few days from now, on 11 August, we will mark a tremendous milestone: one full year without a single case of polio caused by wild poliovirus in Africa.

The magnitude of this achievement can hardly be overstated. A polio-free Africa has been within sight, so near and yet so far, for over a decade. The hard work and commitment that have brought us to this point have been nothing short of heroic. Tens of thousands of health workers reached hundreds of millions of children with vaccine, in some of the most difficult conditions imaginable. Together, we have done what once seemed impossible: We have stopped polio in Africa.

Yet this progress, momentous as it is, is still fragile. As long as polio exists in the two remaining endemic countries of Pakistan and Afghanistan, the virus still has the potential to spread and to spark new outbreaks. Now, more than ever, we need the power of all of Rotary to carry us through to the end: not just a polio-free Africa, but a polio-free world.

Wherever you live, whether your country has just conquered polio or has been polio-free for decades, we need your voice, and your help. I ask all of you to read and use the materials in thistool kit to find ways to raise awareness in your community, and beyond. We need every Rotarian, in every Rotary club, to be talking about polio: making sure that media outlets report on our progress and our elected officials see polio eradication as a global priority. Your grassroots work helps drive the increased media coverage we have seen in the past year, which in turn drives global backing of our work to eradicate polio. Together, we will keep polio front and center in our communities and on our national agendas, keeping up the energy and the momentum that will push us through to the finish.

The battle in Africa has, for the moment, been won, but we need the strength of every Rotarian to help us win the war. Together, we will End Polio Now and truly Be a Gift to the World.

Warm regards,
K.R. Ravindran
President, Rotary International

END POLIO Important Milestone!

Posted by Renata Pancini on Jul 19, 2015

An Important Milestone This 24 July marks one year since Nigeria’s last case of wild poliovirus. That’s the longest period the country has gone without a case of the disease. This achievement has particular significance, because Nigeria is one of only three countries in the world in which polio is still endemic. When the disease is eradicated in Nigeria, Pakistan, and Afghanistan, the world will be free of polio. A few weeks later, 11 August will mark one year since the last case of polio in Africa: a case in Somalia that came at the end of an outbreak in the Horn of Africa. Africa’s countries have overcome significant challenges — including lack of security and difficulty reaching children in remote places — to protect their children from polio. Rotary has played an important role in reaching these milestones. Rotarians have dedicated their time and their personal resources to keep children safe from this disease by immunizing them, donating money, raising funds, and urging governments to support the cause. Rotary has donated $688.5 million to fight polio throughout Africa, including more than $200 million designated for Nigeria. While this is notable progress, we haven’t finished the job yet. Rotary Meets the $200,000,000 Challenge!

Posted by Jamie Maynard on Feb 01, 2012
Rotary International has succeeded in meeting the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation’s US$200 million match in funding for polio eradication, raising more than $202.6 million as of 17 January.

“We’ll celebrate this milestone, but it doesn’t mean that we’ll stop raising money or spreading the word about polio eradication,” Rotary Foundation Trustee John F. Germ told Rotary leaders at the International Assembly in San Diego, California, USA. “We can’t stop until our entire world is certified as polio-free.”

The fundraising milestone was reached in response to $355 million in challenge grants awarded to The Rotary Foundation by the Gates Foundation. All funds have been earmarked to support polio immunization activities in affected countries where the vaccine-preventable disease continues to paralyze children.

“In recognition of Rotary’s great work, and to inspire Rotarians in the future, the [Gates] foundation is committing an additional $50 million to extend our partnership,” said Jeff Raikes, chief executive officer of the Gates Foundation. “Rotary started the global fight against polio, and continues to set the tone for private fundraising, grassroots engagement, and maintaining polio at the top of the agenda with key policymakers.” Raikes also addressed Rotary leaders at the International Assembly.

Purple Pinkie Day!

Posted by Jamie Maynard

The Rotary Club of Woodbridge sponsors an EarlyAct Club at Daystrom School in North York.  The Club consists of a keen group of Grade 3's who are learning about volunteering, fundraising, and helping the community.   Recently, they have had a number of events to raise money for the fight against polio.  They had a dime drive, they sold popcorn, and they had a purple pinkie day.  A purple pinkie drive represents how polio immunizations on a large scale are handled in countries such as Pakistan and Nigeria.  To ensure that all kids get their vaccines, the ones who have received theirs have their pinkie fingers dipped in purple dye.   The kids at the school asked for $1 donations, and they donors could paint their fingers or finger nails purple!

The events were a lot of fun, and they have raised over $450 to fight polio!!!

Thank you to Nancy Payne, a teacher at the school, and a member of our club, for helping the kids with their events.

The Interact Club of Father Bressani High School were our servers this year, and they did a terrific job!

This event, which is a partnership between the Rotary Club of Woodbridge and Christ Church Anglican Church, has raised over $15,000 for various charities.  This year, our project of choice was Project Dream Catcher. Funds raised have gone to Kitchenuhmaykoosib Inninuwug First Nation in Ontario, located 600 km north of Thunder Bay on Big Trout Lake. This community is very isolated, and suffers from many of the difficulties as Attiwapiskat. The money will provide toys, clothing and healthy foods for the community.
We are very pleased to announce that over $3,400 has been raised so far!!

Thank you to all our volunteers, sponsors, Ribbers and all those who attended for making this our best Ribfest yet! Attendance was up over 35% from last year, and our event is quickly becoming an established part of the summer festival season in Woodbridge and Vaughan. Without the help of our dozens of volunteers, we could not hold this event. Thank you for your many hours of work over the three days. It is truly appreciated. Special mention must be made of the dedicated support of the members of the Woodbridge Agricultural Society. Their knowledge, inspiration and hard work make a huge difference in the success of the Ribfest. We look forward to another great Ribfest in 2011, so watch for more information in the new year! CPR Holiday Train 2013

This year the CPR Holiday Train came through Vaughan during the day. As a result, there were no special activities.  The Rotary Club of Woodbridge looks forward to being back in 2014 to serve hot cider!

Our second annual Rotary Ribfest was held this year on August 8th, 9th and 10th at the Woodbridge Fairgrounds, on Kipling Avenue just north of Hwy 7. A weekend of unsettled weather, including heavy rains, put a damper on the activities and attendance, but those hardy souls who ventured out had some wonderful food, great entertainment and lots of fun! We look forward to an even better (and drier) event in 2009! Thank you to all our volunteers and sponsors!

Rotary Welcomes Canadian President

Posted by Jamie Maynard
On July 1st, 2007, the first Canadian President of Rotary International will take office. He is the first Canadian to hold this position in over 40 years. Wilf Wilkinson, a member of the Rotary Club of Trenton, just east of Toronto, has dedicated much of life to Rotary and its causes. He is a hardworking, determined, and caring person, who will be an eloquent spokesperson for Rotary and a living example of Rotary values. Rotary is found worldwide, in over 165 countries, and has over 1,200,000 members. It is a big job presiding over such a large organization, and we wish Wilf well as he begins his term of office.
