Eric Friesen is a broadcaster, writer and speaker on music, culture and faith in both Canada and the United States.  He was a network host and executive for CBC Radio and Minnesota Public Radio (NPR).  For CBC, he hosted such programs as Studio Sparks, Onstage at Glenn Gould Studio and In Performance, among others.  He serves a wide variety of major cultural organizations, nationally and internationally, teaches at Victoria College, University of Toronto and co-hosts a book club  in the Maximum Unity of Collins Bay Institution in Kingston.

Book Clubs for Inmates began in 2008 with a core group of 12-15 inmates.  A year later, BCFI became incorporated and registered as an official Canadian charity.  Following its success in Ontario, BCFI expanded to Manitoba, Alberta, Quebec and British Columbia.  Today, the Book Club for Inmates has expanded from a handful of participants to a nationwide project that has reached the lives of thousands of inmates.  Looking forward, the goal of BCFI is to establish book clubs and reach inmates in every federal penitentiary in Canada.
