Allen Joyst - Dealing with Conflict Respectfully while Building Relationships

 
Allen (Al) Joyst, of the Canadian Autoworkers’ Union, spoke on the topic of dealing with conflict respectfully while Building Relationships.  Al explained why identifying interests was a superior approach to conflict resolution for all parties, than one based on power or rights. Successful negotiation is relationship building.  A person should LEAP – Listen, Empathize, Ask questions (getting the other party to think about his/her stance and take responsibility for it), and Problem solve. 
 
Al was thanked by Stephen Stein who said that, after 49 years of marriage during which he thought he was a great negotiator. He now realized he had just confused negotiation with begging.
