GUEST SPEAKERS: JOHN POLANYI COLLEGIATE INSTITUTE

Two "City" members, Christina H. and Alexander H., presented an overview of the club's accomplishments in 2016-2017. These included fundraising for the Spread the Net project designed to provide malaria nets for people in Africa, and raising funds for 4 countries in south Africa experiencing significant drought and famine.  Locally the club initiated the YYZ project which raised funds through the sale of T-shirts in order to provide pencil cases and supplies for new immigrant students in the Toronto District School Board system.  The 2017-2018 year has launched an expansion of that program whereby kits with winter supplies (hats, scarves, gloves and hygiene supplies) will be gathered and distributed to the needy.  Sales of an expanded selection of YYZ merchandise will help support this cause. Ultimately they would like to expand their program to other schools in the TDSB and the university market.

The final presenter was Nicole A, a JPCI senior science teacher and one of 4 finalist in the National Teachers Association Science Lab Challenge.  Nicole has been instrumental in enhancing the STEM (Science Technology Engineering and Math) program at JPCI adding a significant biotechnology component to studies in the science stream at the school.  A donation from RTE has allowed the school to purchase a PCR (Polymerase Chain Reaction) machine which helps explore genetic DNA and puts JPCI at the forefront of secondary school educators in this area. JPCI is also hosts the Metamorphosis Girls STEM Conference encouraging those girls who are interested in science careers. Nicole's presentation is available on the RTE website at rotarytorontoeglinton.com
