Our thanks go to Mike for delivering the news, Jane for her wonderful invocation, and Charles for leading us in America. Rhonda advised that Teacher recognitions will start in February. They will be part of our zoom meetings with one teacher recognized per meeting. Mary spoke about our Kirkwood scholarship program which will award nine students from our local high schools with $500 scholarships in May. Liz advised that she had receipts from the Salvation Army showing $1073.33 for the value of the leftover meals that we donated. Hopefully, one of these days we can get get back to meetings with meals. Dennis introduced our speaker Jim Dreier, a drum set-Latin percussion specialist, educator, clinician, and performer from the University of Iowa Music Department. Since hearing his first Santana record in 1968, he has had a passion and strong interest in Latin music. He has a degree from the Berklee College of Music in Boston, as well as a Master's Degree in music theory from Iowa. Jim has traveled extensively in Cuba. He shared photos of Cuba with us, including some of the vintage American cars. He said the Cuban people were very friendly. It is more difficult to visit Cuba currently. Jim has his own Latin jazz group, Orquesta Alto Maiz, and has performed with various performers and groups, including the Beaker Brothers. He mentioned that the Beaker brothers had an upcoming Gallagher-Bludorn engagement. |
