As a Big Drop follow-up, Larry announced the awarding of $5000 each to both HACAP and Van Buren.  Penny shared news that Sharon Laird was donating $500 of her winnings to our Club.

 

Larry reminded everyone about Cedar Lake Metro Project on October 10.

 

Lijun introduced our speaker Myrna Johnson, Executive Director for Iowa Public Radio.  Lijun serves on the Board.  Myrna is a member of the DM Rotary.  IPR has 220,000 listeners, 27,000 members, 400 sponsors, and has 26 stations.  Their heart and soul is the news service which has won several Murrow awards.  It also has Studio One and classical music services, including two talk shows, River to River, and Talk of Iowa.  A new service is the Steinway Cafe featuring classical concerts.  During this pandemic they have had to work at homes vs. studios.  Website usage has went up.  Most people listen by cellphones.  In CR 90.9FM, 91.7FM and 910AM are IPR's stations.  Funding sources need to grow to plan for the future. 

 

Our Big Drop winner Sharon Laird sent us a nice thank you this week together with a check for $500 for our education projects.  She and her husband Doug will also be making donations from her winnings to Rotary International and other local ministries.  What a great way to share!  If you see them, please be sure to thank them as well.
