October 22 Service Event: Cops n Kids at Mathew:25
Our October service event really shows how a little work on our part can make a big impact on someone else's life. Join us at Groundswell Cafe at 11:30 a.m. if you want to buy yourself something to eat. Then at noon, we'll get to work in one of the rooms at Mathew:25 cleaning and sorting books for the Cops N Kids program. The program's goal is to distribute 5,000 books annually to at-risk children in the Central District of Cedar Rapids. Click the link below to sign up so we know you're coming!
Peter Teahan will join us fresh from his trip to Circle the Atlantic to raise money for Rotary's work to end polio.
Peter and Ed Galkin are piloting a 1976 Cessna 210 single-engine airplane on a 37-day, 8,800 nautical mile flight around the Atlantic Ocean. The flight includes layovers that will allow them to work on the plane and to hold multiple fundraisers with Rotary Clubs in every country they stop in.
Pilot Ed Galkin, 89, will set the record for being the oldest pilot in history to fly a single-engine airplane across the Atlantic. He has completed four around-the-world flights, including his most recent in 2022 at the age of 87.
Cale Henderson, co-owner of the FNF (Fun Not Fancy) Restaurant Group explained the concept behind FNF. The group operates seven eateries in Cedar Rapids and Marion that "evoke emotion & fuel positive vibes." We also learned a lot about how the group gives back to the community.
Joe Winters has been forecasting the weather for Eastern Iowa at KCRG-TV9 for more than 33 years. His forecasts can be seen on KCRG-TV9's afternoon and evening newscasts. He'll take us behind the scenes to talk about keeping Eastern Iowa "weather aware" and share stories about the day the derecho hit Cedar Rapids.
Joe grew up in the small town of Princeton, Wisconsin, graduating from Princeton High School before attending the University of Wisconsin at Madison and receiving his Bachelor of Science degree in 1987. Joe first joined the First Alert Storm Team in August 1990. After 13 years on the KCRG-TV9 Morning News, he was named chief meteorologist in 2006.
