Vocational Service, one of Rotary's Avenues of Service, encourages Rotarians to serve others through their professions and to practice high ethical standards. Rotarians, as business leaders, share skills and expertise through their vocations and inspire others in the process. Observed each October, Vocational Service Month spotlights Rotary club projects related to this avenue, offering an opportunity for clubs and districts to use their professional skills in service projects.

The founder of Rotary, Paul P. Harris wrote in his Chicago Bar Association Record 1927 entitled, "The evolution of Professional Ethics" - "No prospect is more alluring than that held out by the exaltation of one's vocation as the most available and appropriate means of contributing to social needs".

Following the founder's cue, we as Rotarians are challenged to focus on three basic points as we celebrate Vocational Service Month.

Adhere to and promote the highest ethical standards in all occupations, including fair treatment of employers, employees, associates, competitors and the public.

Recognize the worthiness of all useful occupations, not just those that are pursued by Rotarians.

Contribute our vocational talents to solving the problems of society and meeting the needs of our community.

Vocational Service is the basic foundation on which our Rotary membership is built and distinguishes us from other service organizations.
