Today. President Howard had the pleasure of inducting a new member of our club, Judith Murrell. We first met Judith when she was a vendor at this years Ribfest, and she was introduced to the club by Rotarian CJ (Cheryl) Jones.

Judith is an Independent Consultant with Arbonne, a company that produces and distributes botanically based skin care products.

We welcome Judith to the Rotary Club of Markham Sunrise, and look forward to working with her on our many projects.

We are pleased to welcome Michelle Euwes as the newest member of the Markham Sunrise Rotary Club. Michelle is a Leadership Development Manager with Reliance Home Comfort, and is looking forward to making new friends in the Rotary Family.

Our guest speaker today was Jeremy Grimaldi, a reporter with the York Region Media Group. Jeremy discussed his June 15, 2013 article in the Markham Economist & Sun entitled "York vice squad cops chase pimps, help prostitutes". His presentation was both fascinating and disturbing, as we were all a little surprised and shocked at the extent of the problem, and the lengths to which pimps will go to control vulnerable women and virtually enslave them in the life of prostitution. 

Jeremy had high praise for the officers in the vice squad. They are relentless in the pursuit of the pimps who prey on the daughters and sisters of our fellow citizens, and work incredibly long and sometimes dangerous hours. Since 2008, the focus has changed from criminalizing these women to treating them as victims, with the officers doing everything in their power to convince the women to give up this lifestyle, which very often leads to serious abuse at the hands of their pimps.

On Sept 29, the Rotary club of York will be hosting a fund raiser event in support of the Health Mission Outreach.  Tickets are $150/person held at the Hilton Suites Markham Conference Centre and the entertainment is none other than the ABsalute Gold, International ABBA Tribute Band.  Interested members should email rotaryofyork@gmail.com.

On May 31, 2013 the Cobourg club will be hosting a birthday party for Dr. Bob Scott in honour of his endless service in the effort to eradicate Polio.  In attendance will be this years Rotary International President Sakuji Tanaka.  Tickets are $200 each.  If you require additional information you can contact William Patchett.

This year district 7080 has invited rotarians from district 7070 to particpate in the Rotary-United Nations Day event held in New York City.  The events start on November 2.  Those interested in learning more can contact Valarie Wafer of the Rotary Club of Whitby.

For the second year since its inception, the prestigious Tony Roman Award has been won by a member of the Markham Sunrise Rotary Club.

Club representatives will be at the Hanger 19 Event on August 18, 2005 hosted by Markham Board of Trade

There will be no Rotary meeting on Wednesday June 29, 2005.

Daniel and Vlad, partners in the new Love Gelato store at 75 Main St., Markham, visited the club on Wednesday. February 12. They were there to tell us about the new store, and were smart enough to bring us some delicious samples. In addition, in honour of Valentine's Day, they gave everyone loyalty cards with 2 purchases prestamped, and they had a free draw for a beautiful gift basket full of tasty treats. Darlene was the lucky winner, and she is pictured receiving her prize from Daniel and Vlad.

Our 10th. annual Ribfest was held in July at the Markham Centre, and, with the cooperation of the weather. was our most successful event to date. An estimated 30,000 patrons attended over the 2 1/2 days, and enjoyed great ribs, Mill St. beer, and great music, with headliners Beggars Banquet rocking the place on Saturday night. Patrons were invited to donate to Rotary International's End Polio Now campaign, and we really appreciate the assistance of over 150 student volunteers. The students assisted with parking, greeting our guests, picking up garbage and moving hundreds of tables and chairs.

YRP Chief Eric Joliffe was our Guest Speaker on Wednesday, October 10. The Chief brought us great news on the impressive reduction in overall crime in York Region, as well as the many initiatives being undertaken with respect to diversity, getting officers out of their cars to interact with citizens and small business owners, as well the emphasis on traffic safety. Chief Joliffe is well qualified to lead the men and women of one of the largest police services in the GTA, and appears to have the interest and well being of all citizens of York Region top of mind. The Chief was the first recipient of our brand new certificate of appreciation as guest speaker, in partnership with the Canadian Institute for the Blind, York Region Chapter. Our Rotary Club is proud to partner with the CNIB, and present these certificates to our guest speakers, with a financial donation made to CNIB.

We were pleased to welcome Lisa Pierce to RCMS as our guest speaker on October 3. Lisa  gave us an overview of the many services offered by the Yellow Brick House  to Women and kids who are the victims of abuse. It is unfortunate that this service is needed, and we should all consider helping in any we that we can.

On September 12th., we welcomed PDG Bob and Cathy to our club. Together with a group of Rotarians from Canada and the US, including DGN Valarie Wafer and her husband, Mark, they spent 16 days in India as part of a massive polio immunization project. It is said that a picture is worth 1,000 words, so here are some photos of Bob's presentation. See the photo albums on the home page for more photos of Bob's visit.

On Wednesday May 5th, Carolyn Nemeth was welcomed as a new member of the Rotary Club of Markham Sunrise.

On Apr 28, 2010, Dr. Debbie Smrz, a doctor of Naturopathic Medicine in Markham, was the guest speaker at the Rotary Club breakfast meeting. In her presentation, she provided us with an overview of common issues, e.g. food allergies, she sees in patients and discussed some of the diet-altering solutions available through naturopathic medicine. Her ultimate goal is to keep patients out of the hospital.

What would it take to change the world?

Rotary International is the world's first service club organization, with more than 1.2 million members in 33,000 clubs worldwide. Rotary club members are volunteers who work locally, regionally, and internationally to combat hunger, improve health and sanitation, provide education and job training, promote peace, and eradicate polio under the motto Service Above Self.

The Rotary Club of Markham Sunrise is pleased to announce that it has received approval from Rotary International for a matching grant to support a child centred program in La Paz, Bolivia.

Organized by our own Rotary Club of Markham Sunrise, the 2005 Markham Santa Parade came to Markham on Saturday Nov. 26, 2005! Starting at Main Street Markham and Parkway Avenue, the parade headed south to Highway 7, west on Highway 7 to McCowan Road and north to Bullock. With over 70 entries and an audience of thousands, the parade was welcome by all.

Welcome to our newest members Alex Carter, Nehama Horvitz, and Joseph Chen who were inducted into the Club on November 16, 2005. Welcome aboard.

Club representatives will be at the Hanger 19 Event on August 18, 2005 hosted by Markham Board of Trade at the Buttonville Airport.

Mayor Don Cousens, Mayor of the Town of Markham, has declared the week of February 21 as Rotary Week in Markham. On Thursday February 24, the Mayor will be hosting a reception in the Great Hall at Markham Town Centre to honour the 100th anniversary of Rotary International. Over 400 invitations have been sent to business and community leaders in Markham, and all Rotarians and their families are encouraged to attend. In addition, the public will be invited to attend by way of a press release issued by our Club together with our sister club, the Markham Unionville Rotary Club. Rogers TV will be on hand to record the event, and several other media have also been invited to attend.
