2018 - Host Hospitality Rotary International conventionOn Monday June 25th, 2018 we were honoured to host an evening of Rotary fellowship with our neighbouring Rotary Club of Unionville, neighbours/friends and 12 international delegates from Australia, San Diego, Nebraska, Missouri, West Bengal and Mumbai. Over 100 people attended the event and were able to meet and get to know a little bit more about Rotary members and what we do. They also enjoyed true Canadian traditional foods such as poutine, peameal bacon, bison burgers and salmon put on by the Great Canadian Food Truck. Our Rotary choir sang the national anthem in tandem with a few golden oldies and our finale was well received as our former club president Jim Sandiford, sang the lead in the infamous song, "I'll Get By With A Little Help From My Friends". It was a glorious summer evening that went well into the night and the feedback and well wishes we received from our local and international guests was so rewarding, we would do this again in a heartbeat. We need to add to our 4 rules, "Was it fun for all involved?" as the response would be a resounding Yes! |

Jeremy Grimaldi, York Region Media GroupOur guest speaker today was Jeremy Grimaldi, a reporter with the York Region Media Group. Jeremy discussed his June 15, 2013 article in the Markham Economist & Sun entitled "York vice squad cops chase pimps, help prostitutes". His presentation was both fascinating and disturbing, as we were all a little surprised and shocked at the extent of the problem, and the lengths to which pimps will go to control vulnerable women and virtually enslave them in the life of prostitution. Jeremy had high praise for the officers in the vice squad. They are relentless in the pursuit of the pimps who prey on the daughters and sisters of our fellow citizens, and work incredibly long and sometimes dangerous hours. Since 2008, the focus has changed from criminalizing these women to treating them as victims, with the officers doing everything in their power to convince the women to give up this lifestyle, which very often leads to serious abuse at the hands of their pimps. The full article be be viewed at http://www.yorkregion.com/news-story/3836327-york-cops-target-pimps-in-war-on-sex-trade/. |
