It is an entirely new ‘slant’ on Leadership, Motivation, Customer Service, Aptitudes, Team Building and Relationships, as reflected through the strokes of handwriting. BIG IDEA EVENING MEETING Enjoy some fellowship and special presentation
John Sewell was Mayor of Toronto from 1978-1980. The big changes the Reform Council brought to Toronto in the 1970s was an emphasis on social democracy and social justice, making significant changes in how local government functioned and what it accomplished. Those two changes rippled through Toronto politics in the 1980s and 1990s, but have all but disappeared with the creation of the megacity in the late 1990s. This talk will discuss the impact these changes made in life in Toronto, and what we need a return to them. |

Steve Rutledge Laos
Oct. 11, 2017
Steve Rutledge – President of AAVIL, Rotarian on the International Committee responsible for Asia at Whitby Sunrise Club, recipient of two Port Hope Civic Awards, the most recent in 2011 for Philanthropy, is a recipient of two Paul Harris Awards and The Spirit of Rotary Award. Steve was co-owner of a medium sized computer firm for 22 years. Since then Steve has served on several boards and committees including the municipal Culture Committee, Skatepark Committee, Capitol Theatre Board, Canadian Spinal Research and others. The remote villages of Laos have never recovered from the ‘Secret’ war of the 1960′s and early 70’s. While rich in culture and tradition, their education, healthcare and hygiene conditions are severely lacking. The average lifespan is only 58 years and average age is only in the mid to late 20’s, caused by poor quality water, poor hygiene and general poverty. BUT with your help, a positive difference has been made in the lives of thousands of villagers. We have completed over a dozen school projects, 10 water projects bringing water to several villages and a hospital (imagine a hospital with no water!) and have completed well over 20 toilet banks for schools and villages. We have also provided over 3,277 water filter systems (over 16,000 people!), along with critical hygiene training for families, schools and hospitals to promote a longer, healthier and happier life. That’s not all! We are also sponsoring a lot of primary and secondary school kids, 2 university students and 2 interns, plus we have installed numerous solar panels to bring light to the poorest of villages. Lots of bicycles were distributed to get even more kids to and from school and there were a number of smaller projects completed too. |

Meeting
Jan. 10, 2018 12:15 p.m.
Luke Anderson (Parkdale High Park Rotary) – Stop Gap - Luke will also be receiving a Paul Harris award from PHP - We will also be inducting 3 new members. Old Mill Restaurant StopGap Foundation was registered as a Canadian charity in October 2013 but it’s roots date back to the fall of 2011. What began as a small one-off project in Toronto has turned into a global MOVEMENT! We’ve learned a lot since we first started and have developed some exciting programs that help raise awareness about barriers in our built environment and engage communities to work towards removing those barriers.
