The Rotary Club of Etobicoke with Award-Winning Artist Peter Dusek present: "Serenity" An evening of Fine Art, Fellowship and Wine. Peter, is a Rotarian and International Award-Winning Canadian Photographer. (peterdusek.com) His latest exhibit "Serenity" has been inspired by the philosophies of Japanese Zen and Chinese Tao, Serenity is an exhibition of contemplative minimalist photographs distilling the elements of Ontario’s Muskoka and Georgian Bay region into their purest form. Like slowly sinking into a warm bath, the exhibition will remove the viewer from the chaos of modern life and instill a feeling of Serenity in the heart and mind. Serenity is part of the Scotiabank CONTACT Photography Festival, the largest photography event in the world. Peter has been awarded “Best of 2015” by the American Society of Media Professionals, USA’s top professional photography association with members in over 30 countries. The OSA is Canada’s oldest art society, with historic members including some of the Group of Seven painters. In 2015 he featured his first solos exhibition, Tranquility, at Abbozzo Gallery in Toronto, the exhibition was a sensational success, it sold out two and a half times over, with Saks Fifth Avenue from New York City purchasing two editions of the entire exhibition to represent Canadian Art in the two new stores they opened in Toronto. Visually, his minimalist artwork adds an extra touch of elegance and luxury to the high-end design of Saks. His work is hanging in the VIP lounges, fitting rooms and throughout the stores with a focus on the men's stores at both Saks Fifth Avenue Stores in the Eaton Centre and Sherway Gardens', Last year, Peter was elected to the Society of Canadian Artists, and is ready for his second solo exhibition, "Serenity". Alma, Children's Education Foundation
May 24, 2017
The Alma Foundation was created by Alan Harman after a lengthy trip through South America with his family in 2008. He was deeply moved by the poverty and grace he experienced in remote indigenous communities in Southern Peru, and felt compelled to help in some way. After consulting development experts in Peru and Canada, he decided that investing in children’s education would provide the greatest opportunity to improve the quality of life over the long term in local communities. He first donated to local charities but, after witnessing their poor results, developed a set of guiding principles that he felt would have a sustainable impact and founded the Alma Children’s Education Foundation in 2010 based on those principles. Since then the charity has grown significantly and has been profiled in the Globe and Mail, and Reader’s Digest. Alma was also awarded the Peruvian Chamber of Commerce “Award of Special Recognition” in 2013.
Melanie Rodriguez is the Executive Director of Alma. She graduated from the University of Western Ontario’s Ivey School of Business with an Honours Business Administration degree as well as a Certificate in Sustainability. Experienced in non-profit and program consulting, she has completed 9 consulting projects in 5 different countries. During a 2012 volunteer trip to a Children’s Home outside of Cusco, Peru, Melanie fell in love with Latin America and has returned to Cusco to build upon her initial experience every year since. Previously, Melanie worked as a Financial Analyst for TD Bank, a Communications Specialist for Ivey’s Building Sustainable Value Research Centre, and as a Sustainability Lecturer for The University of Western Ontario’s Continuing Studies program. Most recently Melanie worked as a Program Associate in Nicaragua with the non-profit Global Brigades. |

An Overview Evening for Toronto Ribfest 2017 7:00PM on June 9th @ the Club Office
You and your Spouse/Guests are cordially invited to drop into the Club Office for some Wine & Cheese … and … some conversation about Ribfest. As new members of Rotary Etobicoke, many of you have never been to Ribfest nor have a real understanding about the event. Yet, as you already heard when you joined our Club, you have been strongly encouraged to come out and ‘volunteer’ at the event. In anticipation of that, we felt you might appreciate and benefit from some general conversation and Q&A about Ribfest before you arrive on site. What better way to have that kind of discussion that over a glass of wine / beer and some snacks. We will do it at the Club Office. We have maps and displays that can be helpful. We expect the evening will be very relaxed and will run until about 8:30PM … or so. There is ‘No Charge’ for the evening! Just come and enjoy!! Please RSVP by email to: jdf@flemingadvisors.com … or … Call: 416-436-0062 |

Jun. 10, 2017 2:00 p.m. - 4:00 p.m.
As you know Franklin Horner CC is holding their 30th Anniversary Party and Grand Re-Opening Event on Saturday June 10. I would like to announce that part of the Franklin Horner program at 2 p.m. is Rotary Etobicoke's sponsored Suitcase Theatre performance. This is a great event and I am hoping as many Rotarians and families as possible will attend and enjoy the show celebrating Canada's 150th birthday. This is the first of Rotary Etobicoke's six sponsored performances of Suitcase Theatre's "All Aboard - An Adventure Across Canada" at schools and community centers in Etobicoke. The fun, interactive, educational show celebrates Canada's 150th birthday and takes children on a journey by train, canoe and dog sled to learn about the people, the different cultures and the beautiful geography that make up our incredible country. The original musical production carries messages of friendship, co-operation and overcoming obstacles while helping children safely explore themes such as inclusivity, bullying and acceptance. With Rotary Etobicoke as a community partner Suitcase Theatre will be able to bring All Aboard - An Adventure Across Canada to children and their families in Etobicoke who would not normally be able to enjoy a live coast to coast adventure showing the diversity of our people and places through song and dance. Franklin Horner Community Centre, 432 Horner Avenue (between Kipling & Browns Line)
