Waste Reduction Training for Rotary Events

Comprehensive training session on waste management for fundraising events sponsored by  the Rotary Club of Burlington Lakeshore and the Rotary Club of Etobicoke.

Both clubs carry out a Ribfest every year and one of the biggest challenges has been to address waste management at the event.  It has been suggested that proper management of waste resources employing composting and recycling is not only the right thing to do from a social and environmental perspective but is also a moral responsibility covered by Rotary’s Four Way Test.

To that end, over the past few years, both clubs have employed procedures to divert waste from disposal through recycling and composting.  Our efforts have achieved excellent results such that both clubs have been achieving 75% to 90% waste diversion.  A blog highlighting Etobicoke’s results last year can be found here. 

The key reason for having this published is to inspire other clubs and organizations to do the same.  Should your club be interested in training for events, Burlington Lakeshore and Etobicoke Rotary clubs are providing a workshop on Saturday, April 27^th to go over the key points of planning for waste management at events.  Some of the areas to be covered include the following:

• Overall approaches to waste management
• Recycling, composting and disposal options
• Partnerships – contractors, vendors, municipalities
• Waste characterization – identifying what is generated
• Front of counter waste management
• Back of counter waste management
• Grease waste and ash management
• Vendor contracts
• Achieving compliance amongst vendors, staff and patron
• Monitoring and reporting

We will be ordering a light lunch and coffee for those attending.  We would ask that each person provide $10 to pay for lunch.
