.png) We recently spotted the most wonderful story in a local newspaper and Newlands members decided to offer a small gesture of support to Wilhemina Heynes. Ms Heynes opens her home to Matric pupils in Delft on the morning of their exams to offer them a nutritious breakfast. "Last year, Wilhemina started serving breakfast to matric pupils in her area who, she says, often wrote the most important exam of their school career on an empty stomach."  Last year Newland's Rotary donated R5000 to help with funding for a wheelchair for Wilhelm. Wilhelm is 13 years old and lives in Fraserburg, in the Karoo. He has cerebral palsy and attends the local primary school. His wheelchair was old and not supporting his body properly. He also had limited access to school, because of the size of the buggy. |
 Here are some pics from the Rotary Fun Morning held yesterday at Blue Downs Primary. The event was run by the EarlyActers at Blue Downs for their Grade Rs and was supported by Malibu High Interacters, Khayelitsha Rotaracters and Newlands Rotarians. Lots of fun and fellowship with line dancing, potato and spoon, obstacle races, face painting, storytelling, pin the tail on the donkey and more. The EarlyActers raised R1000 for their club funds from the sale of hot dogs. Thank you to everyone who supported this wonderful Saturday morning! |
 Newlands Rotarians and partners, together with our future Khayelitsha Rotaractors, spent the evening packing 40 Santa Shoeboxes for children in need across South Africa. Each shoebox must contain the following items: toothbrush, toothpaste, soap, facecloth, educational items (stationery), a toy, an outfit of clothing and sweets. The club purchased the basics while members bought the toy, stationery and clothing for their selected child. We all spent a very festive evening decorating each shoebox with wrapping paper, stickers and lots of extra love!  A crack team of boffins was assembled to represent Newlands Rotary at the annual Wynberg Quiz night. Christened the NewRot Nerds, the team took their task very seriously and arrived with all the gear necessary to ensure their intellectual dominance, namely spectacles and pocket protectors. Sadly the gees of the event - as well as the ample supply of wine - completely overwhelmed our quiz heroes and no one can actually remember who won the quiz. |
On Tuesday 31 July 2018, the Rotary Club of Bellville hosted an awards evening recognizing individuals in their community that have showcased excellent and selfless service. Ann Stephenson, mother of Newlands member John Stephenson, was honoured for 19 years of valuable and dedicated service to Tygerberg Hospice as a volunteer. "When I retired, we told my mother that it was probably a good time for her to retire too!" said John, commenting on his mother's energy and commitment to community service. |

The event coincided with a visit from our District Governor Casper Kruger who enjoyed a glass of wine, a hot cup of homemade soup and a barrel of laughs!  NewRots and partners spent an inspiring evening with young visitors from Hinsdale, Chicago who are members of a club called Leap Into Africa. The high school club raises funds for Leap Science and Maths here in Cape Town. Young people committed to ensuring their peers get a great education! Two learners each from Steenberg High School, Leap Science and Maths and Groote Schuur High School also joined us to share their Rotary Adventures into Citizenship District 9350 experience. A highlight of the night was the handover of a Vocational Award to Leap Into Africa as acknowledgment of their incredible work. |
 The following photos give visual progress of the refurbishment of the building construction. The rain has resulted in some deals however good progress is being made and the project is on schedule. the Club has been working with Noluthando for more than 13 years. Newlands Rotary has had several projects with the landowner and with Noluthando Special Needs School. These include the school hall / Vukani Care Centre / Autism Centre / extension of Vukani and the Autism Centre. The school approached us to design, fund and construct a building to accommodate the medical professionals that support the school. |
Past President Graham popped into our Oppie Koppie and Noluthando projects early last week for an update on how construction is proceeding. Work is forging ahead despite some rain delays and the downpours experienced this weekend will certainly add to those! Despite these delays, we can look forward to the unveiling of some spectacular new facilities in the near future. |

The Club has been successful at obtaining a funding commitment from WCED (R250 000) which will enable us to include some of the “nice to haves” that we had previously excluded.  As a fitting boost to the 100 year celebration of Fish Hoek this year, President Marge of the Rotary Club Cape of Good Hope and members of the Rotary Club of Newlands and Cape of Good Hope, handed over the keys to Emergency Volunteer Firefighting Services (EVS) Director, Davin Chown, of the new branded support and transport vehicle, sporting signage, coloured lights, a loud siren and bright yellow branding for use by the EVS team to support of their other big vehicle - also sponsored by Rotary. |

It was wonderful to hear from our bursary students who are all doing extremely well with their studies and many of whom expressed the intention to use their skills to benefit their local communities as soon as they graduate. Rotarians and Rotary Anns from Table Bay, Newlands and Hermanus gathered under the warm Hermanus sun to hand over a rescue vehicle to NSRI Station 17 Hermanus. The Herman's NSRI's relationship with Rotary goes back a long way. In fact, this year, NSRI Hermanus celebrates 40 yearsand their first rescue boat “Florence Carter” was sponsored by Rotary. Since the beginning of our partnership, Rotary has supported Sea Rescue in sponsoring six rescue boats, water safety education in schools, a number of asset maintenance projects. This rescue vehicle is the fourth one donated by Rotary thanks to funds raised by the annual Rotary Wine Aunction. |
April is Maternal and Child Health Month and we are shining the spotlight on one of our community projects. The Zoe Project runs a number of programmes from within the resource-constrained Retreat and Hanover Park Maternity and Obstetrics Units. Their volunteers work alongside government medical staff to support women throughout pregnancy, childbirth and in pregnancy crisis situations. The Zoe Project takes a holistic, hands-on approach to ensuring that these women and babies are supported, loved and empowered during and post-pregnancy. One of the services they provide are Mom and Baby Packs: a set of basic items much needed by new moms and their little ones. |
Newlands Rotary's Youth Chair, Vanessa Rousseu, hosted an Interact Workshop this past weekend at the Nassau Centre, Groote Schuur High School. The workshop was organised by RC Newlands and involved 25 schools with approximately 130 students attending. |
 The Open Door community development and social work project in Ocean View, managed by Valley Development Projects (VDP), now has a new multi-purpose facility which was officially opened yesterday, Tuesday 05 April 2016.Rotary Club of Cape of Good Hope, Rotary Club of Newlands and Peninsula Beverages (PenBev – local bottler and distributor of The Coca-Cola Company products in the Western and Northern Cape) partnered with VDP in managing and financing construction of the new building on Milky Way Road.

 The National Sea Rescue Institute (NSRI) station at Yzerfontein was officially opened this last weekend (25 July 2015), thanks to the successful wine auctions hosted by the Rotary Club of Newlands and Table Bay in 2013 and 2014 in the Western Cape and the Rotary Clubs of Knights Pendragon and Sandton in Gauteng earlier this year. The auctions raised a whopping R926 000 00 in total! These funds were used to complete the truly magnificent NSRI station at Yzerfontein which includes, boat storage for two vessels, a garage for a tractor, an operations room, crew facilities, a training room as well as a trauma counselling room.

Rotary Clubs in the USA, Canada and South Africa have teamed up to distribute free literacy, maths, science and other school books to local schools and educational facilities. The books are sent to us in containers containing up to 25,000 books at a time from schools and libraries in the USA and Canada and cover pre-school, junior and senior school levels as well as adult literature and are suitable for both teaching at all school levels and for setting up much needed school and community libraries.

This program is one of many similar programs supported by the Rotary Club of Newlands. Over the past 12 months, the club has sponsored nine students and two NGO’s by providing bursaries for disadvantaged young men and women to pursue a variety of studies including teaching, commerce, electrical engineering, cooking, seamanship, IT and singing.

 The shortage of emergency response vehicles is a serious problem being faced in the Western Cape (and in fact, the rest of the country). This lack of vehicles often leads to emergency services taking up to 40 minutes to arrive at disaster scenes, especially in more remote areas. It goes without saying that the vital lost time can literally mean the difference between life and death.

 If you've ever experienced a natural disaster or a large-scale emergency you'll have known desperation and heart-pounding fear. Imagine how much worse you might feel when there is no help at hand. Did you know that thousands of people in South Africa Cape endure this experience each year?A shortage of emergency vehicles in the Western Cape can often lead to emergency services taking up to 40 minutes to arrive at disaster scenes, a terrifying reality that can even mean the difference between life and death.
However, for Newlands Rotarian, Colin Burke, a 'possibility-thinker' of the first order, worrying about the problem or even commiserating served no useful purpose. He set about helping to solve it by and, on his quest, created a form for an innovative, international collaboration.
With a significant donation from an anonymous donor and a generous contribution by the LeMarque Chown Energy Trust to set the ball rolling, an energised Burke approached the Rotary Club of Albert Park, in Melbourne, Australia to consider partnering in a matched grant
Although the grant was not to be, our friends 'down under', themselves no strangers to natural disasters, proved their Aussie mettle and established a fund-raising raffle. The prize? .... a return-trip to South Africa! With any number of Australians ready for first-hand debate on rugby merits and demerits, and an 'expat' community wanting to visit South Africa, an incredible R185 000 was raised.
But wait folks…. There’s more to this collaboration.....
 Isuzu Trucks SA then generously sponsored the utility vehicle (a 4-tonner crew cab, which is the same size as a fire engine) and it is being converted by Uni Power Bodies and Trailers in Durban. The conversion will result in an 'uber-capable' emergency vehicle which will be able to deal with rescues, fires, mass medical and care situations as well as providing event support.As a result of Colin’s idea, a meeting of minds and sharing of resources, the Western Cape will soon see the commission of this much-needed emergency vehicle. It will provide services to residents from Claremont to Cape Point, including Masiphumelele, Ocean View and Redhill but is bound to be in greater demand. The vehicle will be operated by the Disaster Volunteer Group, EVS.

The young women of today have so much potential, but they are struggling to get the necessary support and resources to help them tackle their challenges. Too often there is very limited financial and emotional support for everyone who needs it. The Rotary Club of Newlands recognises this need, and is passionate about recognising, supporting and investing in young talent through their youth development and sponsorship programme.
