The Paarl Rotary Club’s main annual fundraiser, the Wine & Good Taste Charity Auction, rose to new heights this year. At the event were (from l eft) president Anne Kruger, auctioneer Dan Nicholl, and the winner of the super lot raffle, Antoinette Vermooten.

The auction, held on 6 October, experienced a dramatic increase in profit this year, thanks to the top wines and hospitality donations which came under the hammer. Auctioneer Dan Nicholl was in top form again and his wisecracks kept the nearly 200 guests amused throughout the auction and luncheon at the Nantes estate.

Thanks to assistance from former club members Walter Finlayson (retired winemaker) and Horst Frehse (retired general manager of a top Cape Town hotel), who each personally sourced quality items, the profit from the auction shot up from R300 000 last year to an estimated R400 000 this year. Part of the proceeds go to the Rotary Club of Franschhoek, whose members also sourced a number of lots for the auction.

Additional funds were raised by art and jewellery items on silent auction, as well as the raffle for a big prize valued at R43 000. Antoinette

Antoinette Vermooten, the lucky winner of this super raffle, who walked away with 2 nights at the 12 Apostles Hotel and a variety of top wines, was herself one of the donors to the auction.

The proceeds of the auction will go to a number of worthy projects supported by Paarl Rotary.
