EPIC. Many interesting guest speakers have visited the Paarl Rotary Club this year. Adventurer Riaan Manser (pictured here with his wife Vasti) recently gave an entertaining talk on his many epic travels. He has travelled around the continent of Africa on a bike, kayaked around Madagascar and Iceland, and rowed with Vasti from Morocco to New York and from California to Hawaii. His travels have landed him two Guinness Book records and have made him a sought-after speaker and writer.
FROM BATTING TO BARRELLING. Award-winning master whisky distiller Andy Watts (centre) of the James Sedgwick Distillery in Wellington addressed the Rotary Club of Paarl on his journey from cricket to whisky. Watts, a former county cricketer who also played for Boland, believes South Africa can produce whiskies on a par with the finest in the world. He won the award for the World’s Best Blended Whisky in 2012 and was recently inducted into the Whisky Hall of Fame. With him are Rotarian Leslie Bergh (left) and Rotary president Bryan Anderson.
CHAMPION. Former Olympic swimming champion Ryk Neethling (centre), currently marketing director of the rapidly expanding Val de Vie housing estate, addressed the Paarl Rotary Club on his sporting and current activities. He pointed out that a fixed percentage of house sales and levies at Val de Vie is channelled to charity. With him are Rotarians Bryan Anderson (president) and Hester Visagie.
