Meeting No 4 - 2 May 2015

Welcome to meeting No.4 of the eClub of Latitude 38.
I started to look at Meeting 3 whilst in Wycheproof on Anzac Day afternoon but decided working on an iPhone wasn’t the easiest. How fascinating was the talk by Professor Andrew Wheeler? Totally absorbing.
I saw a few faces I recognised amongst the participants in the Anzac Day march features in the Anzac film. It’s interesting that those rather beautiful words, attributed to Kemal Atatürk, and inscribed on the memorial at Gallipoli, and also on his memorial here in Canberra, are now being questioned. In this morning’s paper some academic somewhere throws doubt on the origin and certainly doesn’t believe it was Kemal Atatürk. I have so much respect for Atatürk, both as a military leader, but also as the father of modern Turkey, that I’ll continue to attribute it to him. In the short item on the Grameen Bank, and microcredit, one of the notes suggested the government was trying to take it over. I did a tiny bit of research and found this isn’t so. The founder Dr Muhammad Yunus was forced to resign by the government because of his age, but it seems to be still going strong. Great meeting content.
Hi everyone,
I hope you’ve all had a good week and that those that travelled for ANZAC Day services did so safely.
I’ve just watched and read the material for meeting 3. I failed science at school (either because I fainted, was too silly to work out chemical ratios or was just disinterested in physics) but managed to understand a bit about the grain of sand. Who would have thought a tiny grain could have such a journey and tell us so much. The ANZAC clip I found very moving – teary eyes, goose bumps. I also enjoyed the microcredit story from the concept founder and have had the pleasure of hearing Mahammad Yunus speak at the Rotary Convention in Bangkok. He really has made a difference to so many and gives our club a great opportunity to make a real difference in the lives of others who are not as fortunate as we are. To those new to Rotary the ABC’s of Rotary is a handy document to keep. If you have any questions about it, Rotary generally or want in engage with your fellow members please do so.
In closing could I congratulate Russ Voss on his recent marriage – he and Panida are currently on their honeymoon. Could I also offer our best wishes to David Crouch as he sets off overseas for a couple of months. Have a safe trip David and please drop us a line every now and again (perhaps a photo or 2 as well).
Have a good week everyone.
Cheers
Kerrie
