Welcome to meeting No. 32 of the Rotary eClub of Latitude 38

President's Message

Welcome to Meeting No. 32. This week's meeting material includes a little piece on words that should be part of the English language, a Rotary model train exhibition for children, some material on the Rotary International Convention in Seoul in 2016, and Susan Butler, a dictionary editor.

I look forward to your comments on the meeting. Please start up a discussion on any of the topics.

Enjoy the meeting and have a good week.

Yours in Rotary

Kerrie S.

This week's meeting material
  • Lost in Translation- Words that should exist in English but don't
  • Rotary Lights Model Train Display -An immigrant from Slovenia creates a model train in Santa House at the Rotary Lights in La Crosse.
  • Rotary International Convention Seoul, Korea: 28 May - 1 June 2016
  • The Power of the Dictionary - Dictionary editor Susan Butler follows the changing language, documenting it as objectively as possible. There are those who want the dictionary to censor aspects of language that they deem to be unsavoury or undesirable. But language moves on. Today we strive to have every word that has currency fully recorded. When people look up a word in the dictionary, it tells them if their choice lines up with the choice of the general community. The dictionary has the power that springs from this kind of safety-in-numbers authority. More importantly it has the power to make the language variety visible to the community that uses it, which is why we all feel we have so much invested in it.
