President's Message

Welcome to Meeting No.101

Hello everyone,

I have been fortunate this last week to be travelling with my family, catching up with family and extending our family with another exchange student.    Last Saturday we headed off to Adelaide to stay with Paul’s cousins and for Brydie to dance in the City of Adelaide Irish Dancing Championships where she place 8th.  This is the first time Brydie has placed in a Championship (in front of three judges) and her smile and tears on stage said it all.    On Sunday we met our new exchange student from France at Adelaide Airport.  Pauline is 15 and is from Paris and is part of the Student Exchange Australia-New Zealand program (not Rotary’s).  After getting an Aussie Sim (essential for all teenagers with phones) we headed to Port Broughton to the cousins’ holiday shack – nearly 3 hours from Adelaide and an hour or two from the edge of the outback.  Four days of fishing and relaxing before road-tripping to Swan Hill via Burra.  Lots of tumbleweeds, saltbush and some wild emus.  As a city girl from Paris, I am sure Pauline was wondering why she had come to Australia!  Well, in Swan Hill I showed her why – so she could pop her head through the Mona Lisa for silly photo at the Da Vinci exhibition at the Swan Hill Regional Gallery.  A symbol of how different we are to the real Mona Lisa’s home in the Louvre just down the road from her home in Paris.  This type of exhibition really shows our regional centres can attract tourists and investments.  I only learnt of it through a Facebook ad that a friend had commented on and we detoured via Swan Hill just to see the exhibition spending the obligatory night and meals there and then on the way home checking out the Flying Boat Museum at Lake Bolac.  I did not hear, Ian, that an attack on Rabaul was launched from Lake Bolac.  The Flying Boat Museum is a project of the Lions Club and one that they  should be very proud of with at least five other families visiting and duly paying their admission in the hour that we were there.  So a great week, and Pauline is waking this morning to the first view of her home for the year.  I hope she likes it.  On a sad night I see in the news this morning that the International President Elect Sam F.Owori from Uganda has passed away as a result of unexpected complications after a schedule surgery.  Our thoughts are with his family, and the current President Ian Riseley.

Regards,

Deanne S.

President
