Hello everyone,

Last week the Board met and decided to support RYLA in District 9820 by sponsoring a participant, preferably from the Latrobe Valley.  Also, the Board agreed to pursue Cambodia Schoolies 2018 with Kurnai College.  Both great ventures and we will see where they take us.  I had the opportunity to catch up with Amy at Inverloch on Wednesday for a quick cuppa on a very rainy day.  I was only able to be there for 30 minutes but the fellowship was lovely.  In our club it is difficult to always achieve the fellowship of Rotary.  Can I encourage you all to make contact with another member that you may not have spoken to over the next month?  A phone call or visit would be brilliant, but even email is okay too.

And on a personal note, yesterday I attended the Victorian Irish Dancing State Championships with my eldest daughter Brydie who placed 12th in the state.  This is the first time she has achieved a placing and she was the dancer on stage in tears, not to mention her mum in the theatre watching.  Brydie is not a natural at irish dancing but trains so diligently and sets her goals.  Whilst I really don’t like the pageantry of the event, I appreciate the life skills it teaches her.  Yesterday I told her just about everything was fake – the tan, the wig, the makeup, the crystalled dress, the taped on shoes (yes they use electrical tape to streamline their legs – crazy) but Brydie told me very seriously “I know Mum, but the dancing isn’t”.  I have attached a photo of Brydie and her diligent teacher and mentor in life lessons, Fiona Holmes.   Today I am on home whilst Paul plays ‘dance dad’ for teams day at the State Championships – less fakeness, lots of teamwork, and lots of fun.

Regards,

Deanne S.

President

This week's meeting material
  • A Gateway to Rotary in Australia - If you like talking and tweeting about issues that matter in both your local community and communities abroad, come and see how you can join the conversation at Rotary and do something to make a real difference in the lives of others.
  • The best gift I ever survived - Stacey Kramer offers a moving, personal, 3-minute parable that shows how an unwanted experience -- frightening, traumatic, costly -- can turn out to be a priceless gift.
  • Life's way too short not to live your bucket list - Many of us die at 40 and live to 80. Travis is determined to not let this happen. Are you fully living your life? Travis has some ideas about how you can do that instead of wish it.
