Foster care is a temporary support to children and youth who for one reason or another, cannot remain in their own family home.

The guest speaker at the Stittsville Rotary meeting on March 30, 2022 provided some insight into foster care situation in Ottawa. Lynn Desjardins is well-qualified to speak about this vital service as she has worked at the Children’s Aid Society for 30 years and been a Foster Care Supervisor for the last 7 years.
  • The Children’s Aid Society of Ottawa (CASO) is a non-profit community organization funded by the Government of Ontario, legally mandated to protect children and youth from abuse and neglect. The CAS is regulated by the Ministry of Children, Community and Social Services (MCCSS) and governed by the Ontario Child, Youth and Family Services Act (CYFSA)
  • Its mission is to ensure the safety and well-being of children and youth by strengthening the capacity of families and communities by following 4 guiding principles.
  • Currently, approximately 255 children are in foster care in Ottawa, a number that is greatly reduced from previous years.
From her perspective of Foster Care Supervisor, Lynn stated that the goal of CAS is to keep families together in their own homes, however in situations where that is not possible, they try to rely on a relative, extended family member, or a member of the child’s community. She emphasized the fact that foster care is a temporary support to children and youth who for one reason or another, cannot remain in their own family home.
Foster parents provide a vital service in the community, creating a safe environment for children and youth as necessary. Those who care for foster children provide more than a home; they create hope during a critical stage of development and thus the steps to becoming foster parents are well-defined.
The question and answer period provided additional information and further clarified the importance of a supportive and effective Children’s Aid Society in meeting the needs of children and families in the community. Check the website for more information https://www.casott.on.ca/.
