Flipping through pages of a dictionary and discovering the meaning of a word opens up unexpected learning opportunities for kids — and ultimately can play a big part in their success in school.

The Rotary Club of West Ottawa is the lead for Dictionaries4Life, a community service project for Grade 3 students. Many Rotary clubs in District 7040 participate in this literacy and basic education focused project that is supported by a District grant and the Stittsville Rotary club is proud to be able to participate. During 2020, this project was re-structured to meet Covid-19 restrictions.
On October 30th,  Rotarian Jas and his wife Chantal delivered 85 dictionaries to Grade 3 students in 2 elementary schools in Ottawa including St. Rose of Lima School (their photo is seen above), and Carleton Heights so the students could use the dictionaries all year in their classroom. A similar delivery will be made at a later date to St. Elizabeth students. In the spring, Rotarians may connect in-person with the students or talk with them virtually using zoom technology.
