Volunteers at LionHearts Inc prepare 2,000 pounds of pumpkins for pie-making.
Chef Stephen Lasalle at LionHearts Inc, a charitable organization that facilitates the redistribution of surplus food to the needy, has a really big plan. He wants to make 2,000 pounds of donated pumpkins into 200 pies to distribute just before Christmas.
The Rotary Club of Ottawa Stittsville has volunteered to assist in this project as have Rotarians across Ottawa. The photo shows the first step in the process on November 14, 2024 when pumpkins were peeled, guts removed, and then roasted and blended into a puree to be frozen until December 18th when more volunteers will make the pumpkin puree into pie filling and pour it into pastry shells for baking in the oven. The last step in the process is delivering the baked pies to such recipients as food banks that will deliver the pies to their clientele just in time for the holidays.
