President's Notes
Hi Everyone,

Our guest speaker was Sergeant Tony Jenkins – State Emergency Response Co-ordination Division. The Vic Emergency app can be downloaded from the Apple app store or Google Play Store

Once again, it was a pleasure to welcome John Shaw.

We are back to normal (well almost) after 2 fabulous meetings - RETT Syndrome and Vocational Awards.

Bryan thanked everyone who supported out inaugural Teacher Vocational awards and especially MC Charlie and Jan. I’m sure I speak on behalf of everyone when I add my thanks to everyone and especially to Bryan.

I also thank Leon for his work of the RETT syndrome night.

Wednesday was Children’s week – Thanks to Charlie, Barry, Bryan and Ray who cooked 800 sausages for the kids and collected $217 in gold coin donations for Drought Relief

Ray told us about CTC – Communities That Care – supporting troubled youth. I applaud early intervention initiatives.

Reminder that there is no meeting next week due to Melbourne Cup

Yours in Rotary,

P Bronnie
Victorian Emergency Management Arrangements- Sergeant Tony Jenkins
L-R: Program Chairman Bob and Sergeant Tony Jenkins. Tony joined Vic Police in 1989 and has spent 15 years working in Hobsons Bay. Following the 2009 "Black Saturday" event, a revised Emergency Management Act was released in 2013, and Emergency Management Victoria was formed in 2014 to provide overall coordination of emergencies at State level. The Vic Police role is: "Control, Command, and Coordination."
Tony emphasized some practical advice:
  • The Municipal Emergency Management Plan for Hobsons Bay is available on the City of Hobsons Bay Web Site.
  • The "Vic Emergency" app for smart phones is very useful and can be used to create "watch zones." (A number of Rotarians used this at the last District Conference in Warnambool).
  • Sky News provides 24 hr news and is useful for obtaining information regarding emergencies.
Inaugural Teacher Awards- Local Publicity
The StarWeekly (which has a distribution of 48,000) ran a story (copied below), thanks to Goya Dmytryshchak.
Melissa Longo, the Editor of "Around Altona," who was our guest at the event, has sent us the following message, with a link (opposite) to a future story...

"Hi Bryan,

Below is the link to the article I wrote. I have shared it on my Facebook page, so feel free to share it around. I will fit it into the December issue of Around Altona when the time comes.

Thanks again for including me in this fantastic evening.

Four teachers have been recognised in Altona City Rotary Club’s inaugural Vocational Awards for Teaching Excellence.

Amy O’Dowd from Newport Lakes Primary School was nominated by the parents of class 10.

Among her qualities, parents noted she went above and beyond to help children with learning disabilities and had developed a strong rapport with families.

Hobson’s Bay mayor Angela Altair presented the awards last week.

Josephine Montalti, of Laverton P-12 College, was awarded for being a positive influence in the lives of many students and for seeking improvement for every student and staff member.

Sally Tonge, of Wembley Primary School in Yarraville, was recognised for being inspirational with a laser-like focus on learning, a collaborative culture and a focus on data.

Julie Mason, principal of Baden Powell College in Tarneit, was honoured for offering students the opportunity to join service clubs.

Rotary past district governor Murray Verso said teachers were often unsung heroes.

“The outstanding work of our best teachers often goes unheralded,” he said.

Rotary in Action- Hobsons Bay Schools Day
On 24 Oct, ACRC supported the HB Council's School day in Logan Reserve by cooking and serving 800 sausages. Free to school children. A gold coin donation from Adults raised funds for drought relief. (A real pleasure to work with Lauren (who supplied the photo) and other Council Officers who covered for one member who thought working "10 to 12" meant not being required until 11.50am...)
