President's Notes
Hi Everyone,

This week we heard from John Shaw, who shared a number of tales from his time growing up on a farm in Laverton, his professional life in Local Government and a 26-year involvement with the Essendon Football Club.

We had a number of guests to welcome IPDG Peter Frueh and Anne presented IPP Maureen with an RI Presidential Citation on behalf of the club and we acknowledged our then AG Peter Rogers for his assistance and encouragement in submitting this – 14 clubs out of the 63 in our district achieved this.

Danny’s daughter Emily Civitco and Bob Hawkins also joined us.

We welcomed back Lorretta and Frank who have been missing due to health issues. It was lovely to see Maureen L with us – her new role means she can’t get to meetings.

Next meeting our speaker is a father of a girl with RETT syndrome. Leon has invited a number of guests so Kooringal will be treating as a function. The cost will be $25 for a 2 course meal (alternate), rather than our usual. If you haven’t let Frank know you are attending, please contact him ASAP.

Nomination forms are available with PE Ray to serve the club next Rotary year, in preparation for the AGM in a few weeks.

Bryan sent around a contacts details list, please confirm yours are correct and let Bryan know of any changes.

We received a thank you from VSK for the $1500 we raised at the Bunnings sausage sizzle we ran on their behalf.

Charlie M is seeking volunteers for the Children’s week BBQ on Wed 24th Oct – volunteers need a WWC.

Marg raised $6680 for Tour de Cure and thanks our volunteers who ran the BBQ with her.

Bryan has done a fabulous job, updating our club brochure in preparation of our Vocational night.

We have our Vocational/Membership night on the 22nd of October and are seeking nominations for teachers and Principals to present an award to. We need to confirm numbers of guests and our own members.

Yours in Rotary,

P Bronnie

News
Guest Speaker- John Shaw
Former CEO of the Altona Council, John Shaw, gave us an engaging review of his life, and professional career, sprinkled with many interesting stories. (Unfortunately he ran out time to discuss some of the highlights of his time as CEO of the Altona Council and his time with MAV- we need him back to cover this!).
John grew up on a farm in Fitzgerald Rd until aged 23, started driving tractors at 7, skipped 1 year of Primary School. Notable (unforgettable) experiences include being caught in the "Lara Grassfires" of January 1969, and catching Tiger snakes when this was permissible...
John was a keen sportsman, but not necessarily a great judge of the potential sporting prowess of others in their early days. (e.g. Gary Dempsey & Merv Hughes).
John had a stellar career in local Government, starting at Altona in 1964 with the filing, and rising to CEO of Altona Council until amalgamations occurred and CEO positions were all changed. John also spent time with MAV, as a Financial Planner, and with the Altona Memorial Park.
If John decides to join Rotary, he could be a sought after mentor for young professionals interested in a pursuing a career in Management or people leadership roles.

Teacher Awards- Rotary Vocational Event- Oct 22
The StarWeekly published the following notice today (11 Oct) under "Community Briefs:"

"Altona City Rotary Club is seeking nominations for the inaugural vocational awards for school principals and teachers in Hobsons Bay. Nominations, with background material and a short citation, should be sent to info@altonacityrotary.com.au by October 16. Winners will be announced October 22."

Thanks to PDG Julie Mason, Loretta Cormack, Gaye Witney, and Jan Douglas for connecting us with some of the primary and secondary schools in Hobsons Bay. We've also been advised that the new local Police Commander and his deputy will be attending as they see this as a good opportunity for networking.

Bulletin Editor: 2019-2020

Dear Members,

The club is looking for someone to take up the role of Bulletin Editor for next year 2019/2020.

As we has seen this year that the use of Club Runner to prepare the weekly news bulletin has a good basic format which would make the task manageable .

As I try to put the clubs management team together for next year 2019/2020 l would like all members to have a good level of involvement in running our club.

It would be GREAT if this was the first year in many that we had to take a vote for some of the positions.

I am hoping that all members have the same feeling.

Please think of how you can be of serve and the contribution you have to offer to our club and community.

Yours in Rotary

Ray
