President's Notes
Hi Everyone,

Happy New Year!

Welcome back to our first regular meeting. Mandy shared stories of growing in South Africa and moving to New Zealand and Australia as we got to know her a little better through her Member behind the badge talk.

It was lovely to welcome Angelo once again.

We have a Bunnings Sausage Sizzle on Sunday 17th of Feb – please let Charlie M know if you can help out. (This clashes with the District Conference so we will be missing a few of the usual suspects)

Preparations for our Charity Golf day on the 22nd of Feb are underway. If you can assist in anyway, either volunteering on the day or with sourcing teams or sponsorship, please let Charlie M know.

Volunteers West also have a sausage sizzle on the 10th –Maureen L would love a few extra volunteers, if members can assist.

Barry H is organising Clean up Australia day at the 100 steps of Federation from 10 to 12 on 3/3/19.

Yours in Rotary,

P Bronnie

An Inspirational Rotary Journey- Mandy's Story
New Member Mandy Dayal presented an engaging and inspirational story about growing up in South Africa as a "non-white," in the days of Apartheid, and her journey to reach Australia.
  • being born and raised in a fruit orchard;
  • being segregated and told where to live;
  • how she had a Dutch friend, but they couldn't sit together to eat;
  • how she joined Jaycees, and went to a world convention after navigating family concerns;
  • The turmoil in South Africa after Nelson Mandela took over in 1994;
  • Why she decided to bring up her children outside South Africa, and ended up in New Zealand as a merit-based migrant (not a refugee);
  • Her stories about the huge cultural shock and the challenges of making a start in New Zealand were a little uncomfortable for one Kiwi;
  • How her family eventually came to Australia by way of a Company transfer in 2004, and enjoy the multi-cultural life.
Former PM Malcolm Fraser coined the phrase that "life wasn't meant to be easy." However the saying that "when the going gets tough, the tough get going" may better reflect Mandy's journey.

District 9800 Foundation Scholarships for Year 11 and 12

Dear Foundation Chairs / Club Contacts,

The District Foundation Committee once again invites your Club to connect with a School and offer a scholarship for “disadvantaged” students entering Year 11 in 2019 and planning to continue into Year 12 in 2020.

The selection of the student should be left up to the School and while we would appreciate a comment from the School and possibly the student at the end of Year 11 as to the effect of the scholarship on them and their ability to continue with their education there is no requirement for the student to be identified.

The school may choose not to inform the student that a Rotary Foundation Scholarship has been awarded.  The scholarship may also be used to support two students

Foundation will award $500 each year for two years and this amount must be matched by the Club.

The Scholarships will be awarded on a first in basis and will be open first off to Clubs that did not receive a scholarship in 2017 with a closing date of February 15th 2019.

Clubs that received a scholarship in 2017 are encouraged to apply but will not be eligible for selection until after February 15th 2019.

Thank you all for your support of Our Rotary Foundation.

Charity Golf Day- 22 Feb 2019
RI Convention- 2023
It is with great excitement that we announce Melbourne as the host city for the 2023 Rotary Internationl Convention, attracting over 20,000 delegates and the largest conference secured this century for Victoria. Thirty years since Melbourne last hosted the same international event.
This is a big deal!
Melbourne is a Big Events City! The global spotlight will be on Melbourne and how we present ourselves to the world.
The Convention will take place in late May 2023 using superb venues: Rod Laver Arena and the Melbourne Convention & Exhibition Centre. All activities and events are within the Heart and Soul of Melbourne.
This is now a multi-district project initiated by RC Melbourne and D9800. A vital part of hosting is to have an engaged and energised volunteer team to assist all visitors during the Convention. So, "Save The Dates" 27-31 May 2023!

(This achievement was the culmination of a lot of work by people in the Rotary Club of Melbourne, the Melbourne Convention Bureau and the Host Organising Committee).
