President's Notes
Hi Everyone,

Our guest speaker was Debbie Reynolds of the New Leaf Café in Newport – an organisation giving skills to unemployed as well as having a charity arm which feeds the needy.

Community Director Marg, presented Debbie with a small cheque and we hope to have a social function at the café.

Thanks to everyone who has volunteered for the Bunnings Sausage Sizzle this Saturday – we will be raising funds for Very Special Kids. I must add special thanks to Ray for co-ordinating and filling in for our naked chef.

Bunnings Family Fun day is the 8th of September and we will be promoting our club – let Charlie M know if you can help out.

Ray promoted the upcoming Multi-District Conference, in Melbourne in February. I hope many of you will join me (and share a birthday drink with me at the Gala dinner).

We had a quick board meeting and decided to donate a Shelterbox to assist families made homeless by the Lombok earthquake

Yours in Rotary,

P Bronnie

New Leaf Café- Debbie

Debbie gave an informative presentation on her initiative to help long term unemployed people obtain skills through her New Leaf Cafes.

These are at two locations – Newport and Footscray although the Footscray one is currently not open. The café provides people with an opportunity to undertake all aspects of café work including barista, front of house and back of house functions.   New Leaf also links to other groups to obtain food and resources that New Leaf uses for their job seekers. Statistically speaking, over 1800 people have been involved in the program obtaining skills in café operation, horticulture, social media skills and general life skills.   Hundreds of those have been able to find work as a result. Debbie spoke of wanting to expand and support activities currently undertaken by the cafes as well as provide educational opportunities for job seekers.    These include introducing a paddock to plate concept and assisting women’s refuge facilities. Debbie took questions at the end of the presentation which was well received.

A $500 cheque was handed to Debbie on behalf of ACRC to assist and support this fantastic initiative.

Rotary Value Proposition for Young People
Michael Walstrom (D9630) conducted a survey regarding young professionals, and learned that young professionals are looking for networking and mentorship, but have concerns about time, money and family commitments. Rotary can offer considerable value to young people, to enhance their personal and professional development E.g:
Networking: People do business with those they know, like and trust. Rotary can help to expand networks.
Leadership: Through Rotary, young people are able to establish themselves as leaders in the community. "Come, join us, be a leader" is a strong value proposition.
Mentorship: Many young people are interested in working with community leaders and in being mentored.
Time & Money: Clubs like ours have increasing flexibility to address time and money issues...
Family Commitments: Family is important and families are welcome!

What other value propositions does ACRC have for young people? Let's fine-tune our messages to encourage younger members!
