Altona City Rotary eBulletin:  14 June 2019
President's Notes
Hi Everyone,

What a fabulous last meeting of the Rotary Year. Our guest speaker was David Spittler, facilitator of the Asylum Seeker Centre, accompanied by wife Yvonne. We also welcomed Zac recipient of our Westbourne Junior School Citizenship Award and RYPEN participant Dass who were accompanied by their mothers - Jackie and Sunisa respectively.

I’d like to take this opportunity to thank everyone who has supported me as President this year – every member plays a part in the success of the Club. Thank you to the Board Members and club officers and all those who have organised and participated in club activities.

It was lovely to represent the club and help celebrate their 20th Charter Anniversary with our friends from RC Southbank.

I also attended Altona’s screening of Rocketman – the Elton John biopic – raising funds for End Polio Now.

Leon shared a potential members form highlighting different vocations from our community.

I’d like to encourage members to attend the District Governor changeover On Sunday 30 June 2019 at 11:30am for pre-lunch drinks for midday start at Lakeside Banquet & Convention Centre -65 MELTON HIGHWAY, TAYLORS LAKES, VIC

See you all at our club Change Over on Friday 14th of June.

Yours in Rotary,

P Bronnie

David Spittiler- Asylum Centre
David founded the Asylum Centre in 1997 (in Dandenong) on an entirely voluntary basis. He explained the difference between Asylum Seekers and Refugees, and how he helps asylum  seekers with various aspects of living in Australia, including the teaching of English. One of his successes, who has a work visa, has established a local business employing a number of people, and is planning to expand. The Asylum centre has helped over 500 people, including 120 families and 200 children. 80% of the people he sees are Muslim. This humanitarian work is associated with Church spaces- Churches have provided space for the Asylum Centre to operate.

Thanks to Past President Jan Douglas for organising such a wonderful social outing for Altona City Rotary.
Bay Running on the Bellarine Express...
From low gear leaving Docklands at 5 knots, the Port Phillip Bay crossing at an effortless 32 knots (into a howling headwind) was exhilarating for those who wanted some sea air... Melbourne is just visible in the distance.
