Altona City Rotary eBulletin: 13 May 2020

From the President
Last nights Zoom meeting and board meeting went well - we may soon get the hang of it.
Our speaker Leigh Woodgate told her story of recovery from being trampled by horses. She has made a remarkable recovery. I watched one of her U Tube  presentation a few days ago and would recommend members to take a look at some of them . Sometimes I don’t take in all the info presented so for me it’s good to look or read things twice or more. I am sure we would all like to have Leigh as a guest speaker at what we call a normal meeting at Kooringal on a Monday night sometime in the not to distant future.

There are a few members that find the 7.00 pm time of the Zoom meeting difficult and would like to gauge the views of members. The time proposed is 6.00pm.   Secretary  Danny would be pleased to get your feedback. For me 7.00 is fine.

Change over.

There are a few options we can consider.

  • We do it via Zoom on a Sunday afternoon . This should mean all members would be able to tune in.
  • As we now able to meet in groups of 4or 5 we could set it up so we can reduce the number of venues that need to hook up via Zoom.
  • By mid June we may be able to meet in groups of 10 and could just have 10 people in an outdoor space on a Saturday or Sunday afternoon. ( this would exclude half of our members from this event ) and we need to consider the weather at this time of the year.

My choice of these options is number one, as all members can participate. We could manage it like a normal meeting and towards the later half we do the Presidents change over and both the past and new Presidents make a few comments about the past and future year. I as always will go with what the majority wants.

I am so pleased none of our members have been effected by the virus, but please continue to be mindful of social distancing and hand washing. With easing of restrictions some people in our community may become to relaxed and cause problems for others. In the street I live in I saw homes that had 4 or 5 cars parked outside on Mother’s Day . I pass these home twice a day while walking Jessie and these houses normally only have two cars there. I can see some members of our community stretching the 4 or 5 gathering guidelines.

So stay safe take care
Yours in Rotary
Ray

From the Secretary

The only items I have today is that we recorded some of the last Rotary Meeting in which our District Governor Grant Hocking made some interesting points and opportunities for rotary clubs in the current environment.  It goes for about 4 minutes so if any club members want to have a listen, send me an email to jakeandco1958@gmail.com and I will send you the link and password to hear the message.
In future meetings, once we get get familiar with the technology, we will post more of our meetings online to give those who weren't at the meeting an opportunity to see and hear what is going on.

Secondly, I will shortly send out to our members a draft new constitution and bylaws for information and comment.   There are a few changes whilst not drastic needs all members to be aware of.  We will in the next few weeks convene a special meeting to ratify the new constitution and bylaws.
Last but not least our speaker last Monday, Leigh Woodgate gave us an amazing story of her recovering from horrific injuries after being trampled by horses.   I have included a youtube link that pretty much sums up her ordeal and recovery as she tells her story to the world.

Every week we are going to try and put some historical article or picture in the bulletin about club activities.   If you have anything you would like to post in the Bulletin, let me know and I'll get it in.

Dear Rotary and Rotaract members,

As part of our alliance with Toastmasters, we’re offering new communication courses to help you grow your networks, improve your skills, and increase your impact in the community. Visit Rotary’s Learning Center on a personal computer or iPad tablet to take the first two courses (Note: courses can't be accessed on mobile devices):

  • Develop a speech — Learn how to write compelling speeches that take into account your topic, audience, and goal.
  • Deliver a speech — Explore the effect your voice and body language can have on your audience.
These courses were developed by Toastmasters International; they include assignments to help you put your new skills into practice and peer evaluations to help you grow through collaboration. It may take a little longer to complete these courses than some of the courses in the Learning Center, but we believe it’s worth it. And as many of us are staying home due to the global COVID-19 epidemic, you can take the courses and complete assignments from home. To learn more, watch our new video.

These courses are just one of the many ways we’re investing in Rotary and Rotaract members. Practicing and improving your skills can help you succeed in your personal and professional endeavors. And using your skills within Rotary and Rotaract strengthens our clubs and increases our impact.

Please note that all Rotarians and Rotaractors with My Rotary accounts will have access to these courses. If you don’t have a My Rotary account, learn how to create one.

Share your feedback by completing the evaluation at the end of each course. Your input helps us develop new and better courses. And watch for more courses to be available later this year.

Learn more about Rotary’s alliance with Toastmasters at rotary.org/toastmasters. If you have any questions, write to toastmastersalliance@rotary.org.

Revised requirements for the 2019-20 Rotary Citation

We know that some of the 2019-20 Rotary Citation goals may be difficult for clubs to achieve during this pandemic, so we’ve revised the requirements. Instead of achieving five of the nine goals in the Unite People and Take Action categories, clubs now need to achieve at least three goals in each of these categories. The Presidential Distinction requirements remain the same, and clubs still need to be in good standing to be eligible.

We appreciate the work you continue to do during this time and are looking forward to seeing the creative ways in which clubs achieve their goals. Clubs can still report their achievements as described in the
Achievement Guide and use the Rotary Citation Recipients report on My Rotary to check their progress. Contact us at riawards@rotary.org if you have any questions.

Webinar: Connect With the (Online) Rotary World

Be sure to register for our webinar, Connect With the (Online) Rotary World, being held Tuesday, 28 April, 15:00-15:45 Chicago time (UTC-5), to join a conversation with Rotarians who are using technology to stay connected to their clubs and districts. You’ll be asked to share questions before the webinar, and you’ll get access to the recording and slides afterward.

Let e-clubs help you get online during the pandemic

CHAIRMAN'S MESSAGE- APRIL 2020

Dear Valued Supporters of ROMAC

I write to you as we all find ourselves in the midst of an unexpected time.

I must start my communication by saying that I hope you are all safe and well and coping with this medical crisis.  Regardless of how the COVID-19 is affecting our lives, I would like to bring you up to date with the present state of play with ROMAC and our patients.

As you are aware, currently only Australian citizens and residents may enter the country; and New Zealand is similar.  As a result, ROMAC is unable, at this stage, to accept any new patients needing surgery or medical procedures.

For your information, there are two patients still in Australia receiving medical attention.

Firstly, there is Vincent from the Solomon Islands who arrived in July 2019 diagnosed with "complete eosophageal T3-T4 level with no fistula between the oesophagus and trachea / bronchus" as well as "immediate respiration pneumonia" requiring treatment.  Vincent turned 11 months old on the 3rd April 2020.  After many operations and procedures under the direction of Professor Croaker at Canberra Hospital, Vincent is now taking milk from a bottle and oral foods and his weight has now increased to 7.3kg.  He is now crawling and getting into mischief!  Vincent and his mother, Cosinta, are being cared for at the home of Sandra and Brian Goldstraw, with assistance from her ROMAC team.  Hopefully Vincent and Cosinta will be able to return home in July this year.

Secondly, there is Germaine.  Also from the Solomon Islands, Germaine arrived at the Westmead Children's Hospital in early March to be diagnosed with rheumatic aortic and mitral valve disease.  Her operation was successful and she was discharged from hospital at the end of the month.  She is currently staying with her mother and friends in Wollongong, NSW.

Here in Australia and New Zealand, so much is still uncertain.  But one thing we at ROMAC know, is that in the coming weeks and months ROMAC will be needed by sick children in the Islands of Oceania like never before.

Please consider supporting ROMAC so that we can continue our much needed work with children from our neighbouring countries in Oceania.

Please donate now to help.

Keep safe and keep well.

Vincent

11-month old Vincent is recovering slowly from his surgeries and is now able to take milk from a bottle and food orally.   He is gaining weight and is now over 7 kg.

He is crawling and is developing into a typical mischievous youngster, and he loves his Easter Bunny suit!

It is hoped that Vincent will be well enough to return home to the Solomon Islands in July this year.

Germaine

Germaine is a 16 year old from the Solomon Islands who was successfully treated for a heart condition in Sydney's Westmead hospital in March.

She is currently living in Wollongong with her mother, Goretti (pictured with Germaine) who is completing her nursing degree at Wollongong University.

POLIOPLUS

Dear Rotary club president:

Virtual meetings are helping to keep Rotary clubs connected during this unprecedented time, when societies around the world are again cooperating to reach a huge public health goal.

One way to keep your online meetings interesting and informative is by watching videos together. We’re sharing two 10-15 minute videos about Rotary’s global fight to eradicate polio that you can use in your next club meeting. They offer historical context on how broadly that disease, too, once affected societies — and how Rotary took the lead in changing that. They also give an update on our progress toward eradication and list actions we can take together to end polio for good.

Even while we cope with COVID-19, it’s important that we not forget about polio and our promise to eradicate it. We can also be proud of the fact that the polio network that Rotarians have helped to build is being used to combat the new coronavirus. In Afghanistan, teams that watch for polio cases are working to detect any cases of COVID-19, and in Nigeria, medical staff who work on polio eradication are tracing the contacts of people who have COVID-19 and conducting research on the new disease.

And for the most up-to-date information on how the coronavirus is affecting Rotary, see the Rotary Monitors the Coronavirus Impact page.

Thank you for all that you do for the health of others. We are confident that with your club’s continued support, we’ll end polio and make history together.

Sincerely,

Message from Rotary Peace Centres

We have two months left to recruit qualified candidates for the
2021-22 Rotary Peace Fellowship and we need your help!

As club president, you play a critical role in communicating information about Rotary Peace Centers programs to potential candidates in your network. Clubs also play an important role in coaching candidates and helping them connect to districts for endorsement. We encourage you to use and share these resources:

  • Send personalized emails with the fellowship announcement to contacts within your network.
  • Do you know someone who could benefit from our program? Submit their name and email in our referral form and we’ll follow up with them.

Candidates have until 31 May to submit applications to their district. Districts must submit endorsed applications to The Rotary Foundation by 1 July. General inquiries regarding the fellowship program may be sent to rotarypeacecenters@rotary.org

We thank you for your dedication to the Rotary Peace Centers and your continuous support in educating the Rotary network about the fellowships!

Sincerely,
Rotary Peace Centers

Subject: Update to Victorian Rotary Standard Club Constitution

Dear all,

The standard club constitution for Victoria has been amended as follows:

The annual meetings for the club and any satellite club must be completed by 30 November, to meet Victorian legislative requirements (Article 7)

The concept of an entrance fee has been removed (Article 12). This was a change required by the Council in April 2019

Thank you to the Rotarians who brought these matters to our attention.

Updated document attached.

Best regards,

Trudy

Australian Mental Health Researchers
Need YOUR Help During COVID-19

It has become clear during the COVID-19 pandemic that looking after our health – particularly our mental health – is more important than ever.

With social distancing rules in place, many of our supporters across Australia who would normally raise thousands of dollars towards mental health research, have been forced to postpone and cancel their fundraising events.

We can see that this virus is affecting our mental health tremendously. Therefore, continuing to support mental health research to learn how to best support our communities when unexpected events like these occur, is crucial.

We ask that you please consider donating to mental health research today to help Australian Rotary Health #Liftthelidonmentalillness in these uncertain times and ultimately improve the health and wellbeing of all Australians.

We have set a target to raise $200,000. Any dollars towards this will be greatly appreciated.

Please share this link with your family, friends and social networks.

Thank you for your support!
