"Batter Up!"

On 5 October 1990, the replay of the inaugural Australian Baseball League Grand Final was held at the State Baseball Centre in Altona, between the Melbourne Monarchs and the Waverley Reds, and benefitted the Camp Quality program for children with cancer, and the Cystic Fibrosis Association of Victoria.

A celebrity baseball game preceded the grand final replay, and featured some of Australia's top sporting and media personalities, including: Jim Stynes (AFL), Merv Hughes (Cricket), Peter McNamara (ex Wimbledon Champion), Doug Hawkins (AFL), Rob Gell, and Dixie Marshall of Channel 7 Sportsworld.

The evening also starred the Jansen Dancers, Kevin Hillier (radio personality) was MC, and Dick Murdoch was the baseball commentator.

Despite bitterly cold conditions, with the field raked from time to time by rain storms, the evening attracted 1500 people, and raised over $10,000. About 50 children from Camp Quality and the Cystic Fibrosis Association were delighted to meet the celebrities and sports stars, and to obtain autographs.

The culmination of the Club's efforts was receiving the District Significant Achievement Award at the District Conference in Hobart.     Photo: 7-year-old Tiarni Testro and AFL Footballer Peter Foster
