In 1984 Tony Trobe left both a steady job and English suburban life to travel the world and develop a greater understanding of how the rest of the world lives. He stepped off a Murray’s bus in downtown Canberra on a stopover to visit a friend, was immediately gripped by the ‘city in a garden’ concept and has never left. Over a 30 year working career in the capital Tony has spent an increasing amount of time becoming involved in the ongoing debate about the future of our fledgling city. Prior to becoming President of the Australian Institute of Architects (AIA) from 2012 to 2104 he served on the AIA Chapter Council. For many years Tony was the technical adviser to the ACT Government Energy Rating Scheme. Tony is the progenitor of the NEAT (New Experimental Housing Typologies) housing competition, a project for the AIA to demonstrate innovative housing typologies not commonly seen in Canberra. For the last three years Tony has promoted discussion of design and planning issues in the Territory through his weekly Canberra Times opinion column . Tony also has a regular and longrunning spot on the ABC network radio 666 where guests are invited to discuss design issues. He continues to work on alternative models of community consultation for the city’s development and to act as a conduit between the community and decision makers. He brings energy in debate, practical experience, fine-grained design sensibilities, a technical skill set and a critical eye to the future of our adolescent city.

RAISE FUNDS FOR OUR 90TH BIRTHDAY DINNER
We need to raise some extra dollars to help cover the costs of our Club's 90th birthday dinner to be held on 16 June at the Hyatt Hotel. The organising committee of the 90th dinner have been able to keep the cost down for everyone, but to cover guests and our Nara visitors we do need some extra funds. Barbara and Richard have very kindly offered to host a fund raising dinner and you are invited to come along and bring a donation of $50 per person and something to drink.
The sergeant's funds for the next few weeks will also contribute to this effort. This fund raising dinner is also a great opportunity for those of you who find it difficult to attend our weekly meetings to socialise with members while contributing to this major 90th birthday event.

Kevin Saliba ANU - Maleria and associated diseases
Malaria Research at the Australian National University
Kevin J Saliba is an Associate Professor at the Australian National University Medical School and Research School of Biology. He teaches physiology and pharmacology to first and second year medical students and runs a research laboratory that focuses on understanding the biochemistry of the malaria parasite. His research group studies the blood stage of Plasmodium falciparum, the most virulent species of this deadly parasite. This stage of the parasite’s lifecycle is responsible for all the morbidity and mortality associated with malaria. He is particularly interested in the pathways present in the parasite that are dedicated to obtaining, metabolising and then utilising water-soluble vitamins, with the aim of identifying drug targets. He works with medicinal chemists to develop novel antimalarials targeting these pathways.
Although the number of malaria-related deaths has declined over the last few years, parasite resistance to all the antimalarials on the market has been reported and we still do not have a vaccine against malaria. In this presentation, Kevin will provide an update on the status-quo of malaria incidence and mortality as well as give an overview of the malaria research and training programs carried out by his group and across a number of Schools and Centres at the Australian National University.

Since that time, Marie-Louise has developed and expanded the service, its staff and service delivery.
