BRAZILIAN EMBASSY COCKTAIL RECEPTION 25 APRIL-INVITATION Dear Members As previously announced, the Rotary Club of Canberra has been invited by His Excellency, Manual Innocencio De Lacerda Santas Jr, Ambassador of the Federative Republic of Brazil and Mrs Sonia Maria Queiroz de Lacerda Santos to a Cocktail Reception to commemorate Anzac Day and Brazilian Fighter Squadron Day, at the Embassy on 25 April 2017 commencing at 5.00pm. The event is also supported by the Embassy of Italy. Our role is to come along to the event with our families and friends and others whom we think will be interested in attending, with the aim of attracting around 50 members - or more. The Embassy staff will send invitations to Military Attaches, Defence personnel, military historians and partners. A representative of the Governor-General will be invited. This should be a great opportunity for us to socialise in a wonderful venue while we commemorate Anzac Day and Brazilian Fighter Squadron Day, so I urge you to put this date in your diaries and come along on the 25th.
Regards Michele |

NOEL COWARD’S MILD OATES and WEATHERWISE
Written in 1922 nd 1923 both were part of a Revue called “London Calling” when Coward was just getting into his stride. Teatro Vivaldi and Coward have been connected for a long time. The owners Mark Santos and Anthony Hill previously ran the Noel Coward Hotel in Elbury Street , just behind Selfridges in London’s Oxford Street. Coward lived in the house for some time. When Vivaldi began dinner/show packages some fourteen years ago, Coward performances featured heavily. Vivaldi’s closes in the middle of June in preparation for the destruction of the Arts Centre at ANU. As part of the last hurrah, Papermoon and Vivaldi productions will present the double bill of two of the earliest revue sketches written by Coward The play will be directed by Tony Turner, former Ethel Tory Head of Drama at the ANU designed by Ian Croker and costumed by Anna Senior
‘Mild Oats’, an early Coward, penned in 1922 when the author was but 23 and here adapted for the stage raises those themes that will later be developed in his more famous plays, films and songs, but is untypical of him in that both the comedy and poignancy depend not so much on the dialogue as they do on the situation itself, on the gaps and silences, on the stomach-churning awkwardness
Weatherwise, on the other hand, was a credit to the new society. Noel Coward's witty, fast-moving script will be directed by Tony Turner with ELAINE NOON, EMILY RIDGE, ALESSA KRON, PATRICIA MANLEY, GEORGE PULLEY, DUNCAN DRIVER and COLIN MILNER in the cast.

Another Century Another Long War Australia is involved in the early stages of a conflict that may last for the rest of the century and potentially beyond. Terrorism is but a symptom of a broader conflict in which the fundamental threat is from radical Islamists who are intent on establishing Islam as the foundation of a new world order. It’s a conflict between radical Islamists and modern secular, mostly Western, states. The likely duration of the conflict is due to the intrinsic and widespread appeal of the underlying ideology, the youth of those currently involved, their fervour and the inability of those under attack to either realise or accept the true nature of the threat.
Peter Leahy retired from the Army in July 2008 after a 37 year career as a soldier. He concluded his career in the Army with the rank of Lieutenant General after a six year appointment as the Chief of Army. He commanded the Australian Army during a period of unprecedented operational activity, challenge, tempo and change. Since leaving the Army Peter has joined the University of Canberra as a Professor and the foundation Director of the National Security Institute where he teaches, writes and commentates on defence and security matters. He is a member of the Australian Institute of Company Directors and has been appointed to the Boards of a number of ASX listed companies. He is involved in charities including as the Chairman of both Soldier On and the Australian International Military Games, which will bring the Invictus Games to Australia in 2018. In 2014 he was appointed by the Minister for Defence as a member of the First Principles Review into the Department of Defence. His experience is acknowledged internationally with his recognition through awards at the highest levels by the United States, France, Indonesia, Singapore, Malaysia and Cambodia.

Our meeting on Monday will have a revised Agenda to incorporate our memories of Jack Olsson. Steve Hill, District Governor will lead this section of the session with input from other Past Presidents and Rotarians. Please join us as we remember this remarkable man. Following this session, we will continue with the Agenda forgoing the sergeants session
Our Rotary member vocational speaker today is Dr Robin Bell. Robin is a Kiwi. He attended Scots College, Wellington, graduated M.Sc in physics at Victoria University in 1964, and gained his D.Phil. in nuclear physics at Oxford in 1969. Robin then joined the ANU nuclear physics team and also contributed to ANU life as a Staff Tutor at Bruce Hall, then as Deputy Master of Burgmann College. By 1975 Australia had decided to limit its nuclear program so Robin did an Ll.B. at the ANU. In 1978, he joined the Commonwealth AG’s Department and contributed to managing legal consequences of technological advances, especially re computers and mass media. In particular he reviewed both copyright and FOI legislation. IN 1988 Robin became Deputy Commonwealth Ombudsman and in 1991 Deputy Commonwealth Electoral Commissioner. He retired from the APS in 1999 and, with Minter Ellison, became in-house legal counsel to Professional Services Review (which investigates inappropriate medical practice). Robin retired in 2005. Robin and his wife Margot live in Canberra and have four adult children. Robin is totally hopeless at most sports but used to enjoy badminton, squash and skiing, and still plays tennis regularly.
Victoria University has a long history of Antarctic research and the Dry Valleys of South Victoria Land near McMurdo Sound afford a rare opportunity to study Antarctic geology, so-often concealed by ice. Furthermore, ice-covered lakes in those valleys also offer an even rarer opportunity to learn something of the local climate. The 1969 summer expedition included two physicists and a biologist. Robin was responsible for investigating several lakes in those valleys and, in particular, to ascertain whether high water temperatures deep in one lake were due to solar heating or to geothermal effects (the active volcano Mt Erebus is nearby). Uni-celled denizens of these lakes were also of biological interest. Robin will show photos of these remarkable valleys and lakes and explain how that research contributed to understanding local Antarctic conditions. |
