PROFESSOR SHARON FRIEL, DIRECTOR AND PROFESSOR OF HEALTH EQUITY AND ARC A time for hope. Pursuing a vision of a fair, sustainable and healthy world. The confluence of global environmental degradation, social inequities, and inequities in health outcomes shines a light on fundamental ruptures in society. A systems view of humanity reminds us that this status quo is not static. The shifting political and economic sands, globally, provide an important window of opportunity to collectively change the status quo towards a society where communities are able to live with dignity, good health and sustainably. This presentation discusses how such rebalancing of the system depends on a collective vision, the reimagining the use of structural regulatory powers, and the agency of networks of concerned citizens. Each of us concerned about human health, environmental sustainability and social justice are model mongers and chaotic innovators – mobilising and working in different ways and in different venues towards a vision of fair and just systems. Rebalancing the existing inequities and achieving positive outcomes depends on networked combinations of different approaches rather than grabbing at one lever of influence. In a hyper-connected world there are many partners to help create networked combinations of hope.
Sharon has been a public health academic since 1992. In January 2010 she was awarded an Australian Research Council Future Fellowship to investigate the interface between health equity, social determinants and climate change, based at the ANU National Centre for Epidemiology and Population Health. |

Tony Trobe Urban density and Canberra's missing middle
In 1984 Tony Trobe left both a steady job and English suburban life to travel the world and develop a greater understanding of how the rest of the world lives. He stepped off a Murray’s bus in downtown Canberra on a stopover to visit a friend, was immediately gripped by the ‘city in a garden’ concept and has never left. Over a 30 year working career in the capital Tony has spent an increasing amount of time becoming involved in the ongoing debate about the future of our fledgling city. Prior to becoming President of the Australian Institute of Architects (AIA) from 2012 to 2104 he served on the AIA Chapter Council. For many years Tony was the technical adviser to the ACT Government Energy Rating Scheme. Tony is the progenitor of the NEAT (New Experimental Housing Typologies) housing competition, a project for the AIA to demonstrate innovative housing typologies not commonly seen in Canberra. For the last three years Tony has promoted discussion of design and planning issues in the Territory through his weekly Canberra Times opinion column . Tony also has a regular and longrunning spot on the ABC network radio 666 where guests are invited to discuss design issues. He continues to work on alternative models of community consultation for the city’s development and to act as a conduit between the community and decision makers. He brings energy in debate, practical experience, fine-grained design sensibilities, a technical skill set and a critical eye to the future of our adolescent city. |

Dear Members It is with regret that the Tango Night Concert has been cancelled. Jacqui Carias, one of the key attractions of the Concert was involved in a car accident yesterday, breaking her wrist. As a violinist it is impossible for her to play.
