Hunger Coalition - Backpack Buddies
Sep 23, 2019 6:30 PM
Backpack Buddies of Hilton Head was designed to fight weekend hunger and has grown to help children in all public schools on Hilton Head Island. Elementary aged children at partner schools receive nutritious food each Friday during the school year. Children in middle and high school are offered snack packs during the school day whenever needed. Many of the children in our community rely on free or reduced meals they receive at school and food at home can be unreliable. Backpack Buddies of Hilton Head works to fill that gap by providing nutritious, child-friendly food for school children to take home over the weekend and older children to have during the week. Good nutrition is essential for a growing child’s physical and mental health. Hungry children have difficulty concentrating on schoolwork and fighting common illnesses. Those who are food-insecure develop a “fear of hunger” that impacts their behavior as much as physical hunger affects their bodies.

Gullah Days
Feb 17, 2020 6:30 PM
The Gullah culture, though borne of isolation and slavery, thrived on the US East Coast sea islands from pre-Civil War times until today, and nowhere more prominently than on Hilton Head Island, SC. On this small barrier island descendants of the first generations of Gullah people continue to preserve Gullah language, customs, arts, and cuisine. The three authors of Gullah Days: Hilton Head Islanders Before the Bridge 1861-1956 are among those descendants, and in this book, they chronicle the amazing history of their secluded community from the Civil War through the 1950s, when real estate developers connected Hilton Head Island to the mainland with a bridge.

Shop More Local (shopmorelocal.org)
Mar 02, 2020 6:30 PM
A New Jersey native and former Montessori teacher, Meredith DiMuzio seems an unlikely champion for local business. However, if you run a store, restaurant or other small operation, chances are, she’s dropped in personally to hear about your needs. That’s because in the last year, she has excelled as the Executive Director of Shop More Local, representing more than 450 local businesses. Though she grew up in the garden state, she’s called the Lowcountry home for fifteen years. A mother of three, she personally knows many of the business owners she supports—they are fellow parents, neighbors, friends. On a Thursday, you may find Meredith with her kids at the Bluffton Farmers Market browsing its bounty of local goods. Don’t hesitate to say hi. |
