President's Message: Optimism
We hear frequently about HOPE.  I was reading the May issue of the Rotarian on my vacation, and I found the Rotarian Conversation article with Gregg Easterbrook.  One sentence jumped off the page and grabbed me:
“To solve problems, we must believe they can be solved.”
Wow.  Ten simple words and yet they strike you with a profoundness that we rarely encounter.  It is a message of pure hope.  We must maintain an optimism in the face of a perception of hopelessness.
Who among us has thought it is not worth doing something because our efforts will make little difference?  I am sure all of us.  And yet here we are as Rotarians.  We fight to change the world every day in some major ways.
-Polio and disease prevention
-Peace and conflict prevention/resolution
-Clean water and sanitation
-Maternal and child health
-Basic education and literacy
-Economic and community development
Those are the six areas of focus for Rotary.  I know...I know.  Four Way Tests. Five Avenues of Service.  Six Areas of Focus.  These Rotarians sure like to count.
Many of these things sound like something that applies to Third World countries.  Not here.  Right?  But here, we face our own problems everyday as well.  None may be as profound or far-reaching as the efforts to eradicate polio or finding peace where war previously existed, but our problems are real and persistent.  As Rotarians, we must help lead our community to face these problems and find solutions.
We recently made a significant donation to the Police Department for Narcan kits.  Those will save lives.  Today.  Tomorrow. Perhaps for years.
So what’s next?  What can we do to continue to move the ball forward on the opioid public health epidemic facing our community?  Did we do enough?  Or can we do more?  I am sure that we will do more.
That is my HOPE this week.  That we continue in our efforts to help a struggling segment of our community.
What is your hope?...
