Our Rotary Club featured in “The Southern Argus” last week with our ongoing project of helping the homeless in the region.
Saturday last, 5th June was World Environment Day and to celebrate, Rotary launched their new area of focus – Supporting the Environment, on Friday night by a zoom forum from around Australia, New Zealand & Pacific Island regions. This was attended by our environmental committee and a few others.

Helga progressing, but needs someone with her 24 hrs a day.
Noeline deposited $100 for ShelterBox. This came from bottles and cans, much of which came from Malcolm and Patricia Milne.
Kevin informed us that the ringpulls from food cans weigh 4 times as much as those from soft drink cans, so if you are collecting ringpulls, don’t omit those from food cans.

Di – Environment.
One of areas of focus of Rotary for many years. In conjunction with other organisations, Rotary has planted thousands of trees. Environment is now the seventh area of focus of Rotary, which means environmental projects can now receive global grants, and can thus do much more towards the environment.
In the next year, we are hoping to have an area where we can plant tree, called Rotary Centennial Park in honour of Rotary’s centenary.
The canvas bag stand in the Goolwa shopping mall has now raised $1000.
Alan Williams – Christmas Festival
We have no idea of the rules and regulations, or what they will be at Christmas .If we don’t have confirmation of the area we can use and the Covid rules by the end of the month, we will have to cancel the festival.
Alan is working on a project to show the begore and after photos of the areas where we have done tree planting. Alan will organise a trip in spring, for the club to visit and take photos of the areas where we have planted trees.
Guest Speaker
Di introduced our guest speaker, Ian Powrie, who has a great depth of knowledge of the wine industry, through university research and at the coal face.
Ian talked about the breakdown of a $10 bottle of wine:
35% for the winery
The state gets 23.4%
The balance is in the distribution chain, eg supermarkets, bottle shops etc.
Covid has affected the sales of wine positively in the short term. Ian also talked about the problems in having such a large investment in one export market, ie China.
Ian talked about the marketing, sales and pricing structures of wine in Australia and also the changes in export markets from China to other countries.
