Wendy then welcomed everyone.
  • The RSL will be re-opened this Friday with limited numbers. Masks must be worn when entering & moving around. You must be seated to eat and drink. We will be negotiating with new chef for our future meetings.
Meanwhile, the Middleton Tavern have made us feel most welcome & are happy for us to use this room if need be.

  • RYDA – 2 Volunteers needed for both Fridays 10th & 17th September 8:30 to 3:00pm
Kevin, Roger, Averil & Di have put their hands up to help out.

  • DG Jeff Neale’s visit on 16th November – Board required to meet 1 hour before meeting at 5:30 pm
  • We had our first meeting for GAPE last night and Greg Casson was elected as Chair. The first item we have to address is the availability of Signal point. We have already booked it but there is a possibility the renovations may cause some grief.Greg will be following up with Leah Grace. Greg is unable to return to SA because the SA government considers the ACT in the same category as NSW and will only allow essential travellers in. Everyone else can only get in on compassionate grounds and have supervised quarantining for 2 weeks.
  • Thank you to all those taking photos in everything we do Rotary. Remember if there is no photo, it didn’t happen! If a non-Rotarian is in the photos, please confirm with them that it’s ok to use in social media. It’s really important for promoting our club & our public image within the community.
Please forward all photos to Andy Wood for storing in Rotary files on One Drive and ClubRunner.
  • Andy is doing a member profile in each bulletin, so please write a few paragraphs about yourself, include photos if possible & share your story. Please forward to Andy - andy.wood@optusnet.com.au
  • Our initiative to offer a small gift of a locally found bottlebrush plant to new home buyers to welcome them has been eagerly accepted by local real estate agents, with orders already in for this month. This easy-care plant, ‘Callistemon Rugulosis’ will thrive either in a large pot or in the ground and was chosen after consultation with Community Garden personnel. https://www.gardensonline.com.au/GardenShed/PlantFinder/Show_1211.aspx
  • Also require assistance from club members for spare pots for plants to be taken to Calpernum. Please give to Di Keach. (Contact Di for pot sizes)
  • Combined meeting with Victor Harbor – Wednesday 4th August at the Crown Hotel 6:30 for 7:00 pm start-attending are Duncan, Tony McWhinney & Andy.
Speakers Tim Harper and ‘Moose’ Dunlop OAM, Retired Lieutenant Colonel, CFS Brigade Captain and co-Founder of Trojans Trek will be talking about the origin of Community Fire Tanks, their pivotal role in controlling wild fires and enormous impact on Greenhouse Gas.
Tim Parker runs a company called Pioneer Tanks and they are supplying various tanks across SA communities to help rural areas hold water to assist in fire situations. These tanks are located across areas of high fire risk. Trucks are able to fill these tanks and make access to water much faster than individual fire trucks driving large distances to fill up, ensuring they fight fires more effectively.
  • Speakers needed - There are plenty of dates still available – 1st & 3rd Tuesdays of the month. Please notify myself or Andy.
It was lovely to see everyone again.I hope you have all enjoyed yourselves.

2-Minute Spots.
Yvonne Hurrell - Wheelchairs
Yvonne has been collecting money for wheelchairs for many years. People in wheelchairs first came to her attention when her aunt who had polio, was in a wicker wheelchair (in those days called a bathchair). Her son-in-law was also in a wheelchair, for whom they raised money for him to play international basketball. Yvonne presented us with the money for another wheelchair from visitors donations in her home.

Guest Speaker
Andy introduced our guest speaker, Andrew MacMichael,  from the South Coast SES, Who gave us interesting  talk on the history of the SES. The South Coast SES is based in Port Elliot, they have 2 trucks, one of those is used for road crash rescue. They cover different areas for road rescue and flood and storm damage.
They also work with the CFS and Volunteer Marine Rescue.
The SES started during the war years as part of the Civil Defence.
Andrew showed us a video of the rescue competition, which has been won the last 5 times by Tea Tree Gully SES.
Drones  are now being used to locate people who are lost.
They can find them much faster than people on the ground.
Andrew also showed another video of various rescue scenarios.

Wendy closed the meeting at 8:31 with this year’s theme - LET US SERVE TO CHANGE LIVES.

Next meeting on Tuesday August 17th at the Goolwa RSL Club at 6:30 for a 7pm start. Don't forget to give Greg your meal orders.

We are introducing a new item into the Bulletin, Members profiles. First up we have Kevin Hales. Kevin's profile is in 2 parts, the second part will be in the next bulletin.
Member Profile - Kevin Hales

I was born 26 March 1946 in Maffra, in East Gippsland, Victoria, to parents George & Ivy.
I was the youngest of 3 children; two sisters 8 & 3 years old.
My parents were married in 1934 in the general region where we lived. My father was in a Road Construction business with his brother-in-law working on local government projects in this same general region. Dad was away from home Monday to Friday most weeks due to this work, while our mother held the ‘fort’ and ran our home.
I attended Primary School in Maffra until year 3 when we moved to Primary School in Bairnsdale 70 kms further East in Victoria. My Secondary School education was at Bairnsdale Technical School, then I commenced a Fitting & Turning Apprenticeship with the State Electricity Commission of Victoria at the Brown Coal Mining operation in The Latrobe Valley 150 kms East of Melbourne in 1962.

Alice & I met during this period when I was an apprentice; when we were both attending an Easter Youth Camp at a location called Lake Tyres, East in the Gippsland region.
Alice was studying for 3 years in Melbourne, to become a Home Economics Teacher during some of the years of our early friendship. Alice’s first appointment was at Traralgon High School in the Latrobe Valley, in Victoria
We were married in January 1967 at Yallourn Methodist Church, which was the area where Alice had grown up, after her family had Migrated to Australia from Holland in 1956.
We lived in Traralgon following our marriage.

By June 1967 we were living in the North West of W.A. at Tom Price, which was the very, very early ‘days’ of the development of the current Iron Ore industry as we know it today. Across the next 5 years our 3 children were all born in Tom Price and at the time our youngest was born, we moved 90 kms South to Paraburdoo where a new mine was being developed and we lived for the following 6 years. For the first 4 years I had worked in my trade field then moved into middle management positions across the following years. During our years in Paraburdoo, Alice was Home Economics Teacher at the District High School with our children progressively attending the Primary School.
In May 1978 we moved to Goulburn NSW, where I worked again in Middle Management at a new Copper, Lead & Zinc mining operation, which was located midway between Goulburn & Canberra. Alice was also employed at a Home Economics Teacher at a Goulburn Catholic Girls School. We built a home in the first year living in Goulburn and our 3 children attended one of the local Primary Schools, then on to one of the High Schools in town. (Goulburn population was 25,00 residents in those years.)

In early 1986 we moved to Adelaide where I was employed by a company sourcing and manufacturing mining equipment spare parts and Alice obtained a Home Economics Teaching position at a Catholic Girls school. Our son transferred his employment to a SA Bank Branch and our two girls attended Secondary School while we lived in the North Eastern suburbs of Adelaide.

THE NEXT INSTALLMENT OF OUR STORY CONTINUES IN THE NEXT CLUB BULLETIN. -KEVIN H.
A bit of Humour

A bit of wisdom from a kangaroo.
When the zookeepers found a kangaroo wandering about in the wee hours of the morning, they coaxed her back to her enclosure and added another few feet of fencing atop it. Thinking the issue was settled, they were surprised to
find the kangaroo wandering about the zoo the next morning. Once again, they brought in materials to increase the height around the enclosure. “It’s now 20 feet tall,” one worker said to the other. “Surely, that kangaroo won’t be able to hop over this.” However, the next morning the kangaroo was found outside the enclosure, visiting the other animals in the zoo. This time the height of the enclosure was increased by another 30 feet. With the kangaroo secured in the habitat, the workers left satisfied that they’d created a tall enough barricade that couldn’t be breached. “I’ve seen humans do a lot of crazy things in my time, but this takes the cake,” a koala said to the kangaroo. “How high do you think they’re willing to make this thing?” “Who knows?” said the kangaroo. “I wonder if they will take some of this down once they realize they keep leaving the gate unlocked.”
