Report from President Debbie

I hope everyone had a wonderful day on Sunday and that we thought about all the Mothers in our lives, be it in the past or present.  To those Rotary Mother's out there I also hope you had an amazing day.

We are planning an “Epic Day of Service” in May, with the exact date still to be confirmed. This will involve members assisting with working bees and projects within Rotary Centenary Park (RCP), continuing the fantastic progress already made there.

We also have a tidy up working bee planned at our Skewes Road yard area this Saturday from 9:00am until 12:00pm, weather permitting - I don’t think any of us are too keen on working in the rain!

The recent Pioneer Adventure Day was an outstanding success. The farmers and families who attended were overwhelmed by what Rotary provided and the support shown throughout the day. Importantly, SA Health conducted health checks during the event, which resulted in some very significant findings, including two farmers being diagnosed with advanced melanomas, one person found to have critically high blood pressure, and three people diagnosed with diabetes. It really highlighted the value of bringing health services directly into rural communities and showed the difference community events like this can make.

I also recently had friends visit from Sydney, including a mentor from my year as Club President. After lunch at the Wharf, I took them to see one of our major projects, Rotary Centenary Park. They were extremely impressed with the work completed so far and were especially pleased to see the Ian Riseley plaque featured within the park. They commented very positively on our vision for the space and thought the ideas behind the project were wonderful for our community.

I hope you all have an enjoyable weekend and I look forward to seeing you on the 19th.

Debbie Buckingham
President

Meeting 1658 - 5th May 2026

Apologies: Steve Dick, Carrol Grant, Greg Casson, Wendy Lippett, Dee Bailly, Andy Wood, Shannon Welk

Visitors: Brian Tapping, Phil Smith, Dave Steffens and Lorenzo Sanches-Pagliuso

Guest Speaker:  Alan Williams

Members enjoyed a wonderful meal before the meeting, slow-cooked balsamic pork and pears, followed by cake and ice cream for dessert.

Sonia took on the role of Sergeant for the evening and gave a cracking effort throughout the night. Well done, Sonia, on a fantastic job keeping everyone entertained and on their toes!

Tony McWhinny delivered a heartfelt invocation and thanks to Rotary, which was greatly appreciated by all present.

President Debbie then officially opened the meeting and provided her President’s Report, giving members an update on upcoming activities and events within the club and community.

Members were also reminded about the upcoming Changeover afternoon, to be held on 28 June at the Yacht Club. The afternoon will cost $10 per person, with drinks available to purchase separately at the bar.

We also heard several two-minute spots during the evening from Tamara, Sonia, David McDonald, Theresa, and Di. Janet also shared some birthday cheer by handing out a birthday card and Chocolates to Tamara.

Tonight’s guest speaker was our very own Alan Williams.

After a few technical difficulties connecting the computer to the television screen, Alan delivered an informative and engaging presentation about Whyalla during the years he lived there, including fascinating insights into the history of the steelworks, local buildings, and the development of the town over the years. Thank you, Alan, for sharing your memories and knowledge with the club.

Sonia then returned to conduct fines, including for those who hadn’t purchased art and those not wearing their gold badges! There were also Happy and Sad Dollars shared around the room, along with some lovely “Thank You Dollars,” an idea introduced by Meredith. Thank you, Meredith, for bringing such a positive and thoughtful addition to the evening.

Ingrid was the lucky raffle winner for the night and drew out a white ball, leaving just three balls remaining.

Members also enjoyed an Australian-themed quiz, with chocolates handed out along the way to successful participants.

After another enjoyable evening of fellowship, fun, and Rotary spirit, the meeting was officially closed.
